Often times, my students in Philippine history ask…”Ma’am, is the teaching of Philippine history subject still relevant in our course? Past is past, we could not change it. We could not give back the lives lost nor use the names of our hero’s, such as Jose Rizal, Emilio Aguinaldo, Andres Bonifacio and others as references when we apply for a job. If we do use their names, definitely, we will not be hired. We will not even ask what is  Philippine history during the interviews. So, what is the use of studying Philippine history?

When I hear these questions, it makes me think for a while and say with conviction… Yes! Learning Philippine history is still and will always be relevant. The fact that we are a true blooded Filipinos, the fact that every generation was and will always be a product of history, history will always be a relevant subject regardless of what course a student takes up.

The Philippines was controlled by foreign colonizers for almost 400 years. History can tell us that during the colonization period Filipinos were not taught their own history but rather were taught the history of colonizers WHILE they were in our country. Sadly, Filipinos were likes parrots. Filipinos were forced and trained how to memorize dates, persons, places and events without even understanding what they memorized.

As a new breed of historians, teachers of history must not only be limited to questions of who, what, were and when. Teaching history should go beyond dates, persons, places etc. Teaching the HOW’s and the WHY’s of history would train the student show to think critically. Furthermore, teaching history through contextualization would develop in students a deep sense of understanding of their origins and would develop in them active participation, not only in classroom discussion, but also in performing their role as citizens of our country.

Apparently, Filipinos are suffering from national amnesia. Colonial mentality is deeply rooted in those who are not proud of being a Filipino and in those who look at anything foreign as best. Thus, colonial mentality destroys our national identity. Therefore, teaching Philippine history subjects is a must and must be strengthened especially by the academe, so that we can produce a new breed of Filipinos who have a strong sense of NATIONALISM in their hearts and minds. As a result, whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it and the future generation would be freed from the bondage of tyranny and slavery.

Good article. It’s wonderful to discover some bits of Philippine history and its rich culture.

2. Billy Juhn Asuncion - August 12, 2008

Indeed, Philippine History is such a boring subject to learn in school. Who cares if I don’t know what occured before and what the people have done before that we should owe. Right? But Iv’e fully realized that the subject is not just a subject to take for completing a course in college nor a pre-requisite in proceeding to next semester. It’s a matter of how we understand the history and culture of the Philippines for we are inhabitants of this land and we are the one, the Filipinos, who are liable for taking care of this country because we are products of Philippine history.

“So that we can produce a new breed of Filipinos who have a strong sense of NATIONALISM in their hearts and minds”. This statement strucked me most for this reflects the reality of the Philippine situation nowadays. Look at Philippines now. Many Filipinos lost there sense of being a nationalistic for they are being blinded by the trends currently appearing in the society. Also, the beliefs and culture of many filipinos are transformed and changed into the new ones (foreign culture and beliefs).

Another thing is that studying Philippine History would help us transform society. It is true that “whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it and the future generation would be freed from the bondage of tyranny and slavery”. Upon studying history, we would have precautions and hints on what to do in the present because of our expereinces before. Just like the lack of unity which the Filipino showed before, thats why they are always defeated on their revolts against the Spaniards. And that is what we should’nt do today. We must unite and hold hands together when fighting not against the colonizers but against the struggle between co-Filipino people within the country.

I was really impressed to your work Maa’m G.You had made such an excellent work for us to ponder on. Two thumbs up, Ma’am!

hi ma’am..! You do have a nice “blog”, uhm…though Philippine History subject seems to be really boring, (but atleast in our class it has never been boring..heheh) we really need to learn the past of our country, for the reason that people today especially the youth like us would know what happened in our country before and so that we could avoid it to be happening again, for the fact also that we are a TRUE BLOODED FILIPINOS we need to learn our country’s history, culture, and more things that are related in our country. Though we can’t deny that what is more important to some other people here in our country is “imported” or from foreign country, but still we need to be proud or, “tangkilikin natin ang sariling atin!”

Philippine History subject could make us also somewhat pity our country but on the other hand it also makes us think to aim higher for our country’s future! One way or another the subject could help feel or realize our being nationalistic or makes us feel the love for our country, for the fact that if there’s a lesson about “mga pinoy na sinasaktan”, we can’t afford to sit and just listen, but we do always comment or react to that matter.

For me, it is one of the important subject though it is not needed in applying some job but atleast we already have some ideas about what happened in our past and what we have to do in order to avoid it in the present and even in the future.

Philippines is a rich country not financially but in culture and specially in History. Philippine history is one of the boring subject i have, yet it is interesting in the since that i can learn more important details about the history of my country. Thou Philippines is influenced by the other country still our nation has its true best Filipino culture that you can be proud of. As a student the importance of studying Philippine History is that it can help us to grow more and become a better people of our nation. Yes, we cant bring back the life of our heroes and heroine who fought for our country, who shed blood just to have our freedom. But as a Filipino and member of this society we are obliged to know our own history its not because it is required in the curriculum but to give meaning or importance to those who are involved during the colonization of the other nation. Most specially in this new generation, for us to correct the mistakes in the past and for us to be the one to improve more what our ancestors have started.

It’s really true that most of us are asking what s the importance of studying Phil. His2ry. You know, it’s a boring subj. n in fact during my high skol days, we can’t help but we wer rely slepy (take note: afternoon clas..zz..zz..).Our teacher kept us on memorizing certain names, dates n places. Honestly, I didn’t learn something that’s why 2day, I fel that I started back again. But now our dear teacher made the bore said good-bye(bravo!!!)

B4 and even up to day, it’s hard to identify a person if he/she is a filipino or not. Now, because of studying our hi2ry, I found out that we are products of mixed culture, and that’s make us unique anyway. In this short discovery, i can rely prove dat studying phil. hi2rey s relevance.

6. Coleen Kate B. Rañoa - August 14, 2008

I agree that our Filipino ancestors were not taught of our own history for 400 years. Many colonizers came to our country, but none of them made an effort to teach us our own history. As a result, we were taught of other country’s history, instead of our own Philippine History. In my own opinion, even though there are lots of students who dislike learning Philippine History, in one way or another, Philippine History is still relevant. First, Learning our Philippine History will not just strengthen our sense of NATIONALISM in our hearts and minds, but will also teach us lessons from all the events that had happened during our history. I believe that there’s always a lesson to be learned in every event that had happened. Second, we will also learn to appreciate the efforts and achievements of our own Filipino ancestors. In one way or another, they have also contributed something good to our country. Because of the abuses of our colonizers towards the Filipinos before, Filipinos learned how to fight and defend themselves. And that kind of character still remains in the generation of Filipino people today. And third, we will learn to appreciate our country as a whole, with all its cultures, traditions, etc. This is just some of the reasons why Philippine History is still relevant, in one way or another. If only students will take this course by heart, many good things will possibly happen based from all the lessons that we can learn from our own Philippine History. . .and one of which is the possibility of eliminating corruption in our country. 130

This article is nice,it gives significance about the Phillippine history. In the sense that every Filipinos should be inspired and give importance about the thing that our Filipino heroes gave, in order to get this freedom that we are having now. This Philippine history gives us the courage to prosper because of the works and writings from the past that the fact that we should be inspired of f filipinos are going to think about it. do they think about the past? this is the question?.Philippine history must be studied because it is rich in culture. That we should know where culture we belong.930

8. adonis marq cabo - August 14, 2008

Tis true, probably i would agree. From the given article, it is a fact that phil. history is really needed by the students to know, thus, through the knowing our history here in the phil. we could know details that may help us straightens the things our “ninunos” had left us. being a Filipino, we must not be ashamed of what we are and what our nation is, but, it is infact the Filipino people who are showing what we are as a nation not as an individual.
National amnesia is not a big problem because we could understand why some are thinking that other country is better than ours. we could say government may be 1 cause of our discrimination from our country but we should also not put all the blame in them because they are not the only people who is living in this society, we have ourself to help the government in changing the thing we know that is wrong. we can help each other and regain the blooming field of the phil. and once prove that phil. is thus the “pearl of the the orient sea” as what Rizal has describe the phil.
For us student, it is not to late to help. we are describe as the hope of the country. we should help developing our country, and and we learn from the history of the phil. we nurture all the lessons we’ve learn and all the wrong thing that we have learned from our history, we need to nourish them and from it, we can see change.
Philippine History is not only a subject, it is our own history. we should love it and understand it. through this history many things can be seen that needs to be change and it is we, who have learned this things to make an action and help building our nation to a prosperous one.-1:00pm

I my self is guilty in asking that question.
further more by reading this article.
It opens my mind on how Fillipinos are poor on realizing the imporatants of PHILIPPINES HISTORY.
As a college student, i’ve been studying HISTORY or A.P. (Araling Panlipunan) for 4 years in my highschool. Not including my SIBIKA AT KULTURA in grade school.
It makes me feel glad knowing my great anscestors who risk their lives for our country.Their sacrifices serves as a legacy that is pass to me and to my fellow next in line generation. There for, it is my responsibility to treasure and protect their efforts. and continually LOVE And SERVE my country.

Trully studying PHILIPPINE HISTORY is IMPORTANT and A MUST!
Not just because it is my responsibility as a student, to pass that subject. BUt further more it is my responsibility because “I AM A TRUE BLOODED FILIPINO”.

I agree that Phillipine History subject is important. You may think that this subject cannot help you in your daily lives but you’re WRONG! We can apply our learnings from this subject to our daily lives by knowing the mistakes that our ancestors made and trying to avoid doing the same mistake that they did. Some Filipinos during the spanish colonization are not proud that they are Filipinos because Filipinos were opressed and discriminated. Doña victorina, a character in Rizal’s novel (Noli Me Tangere) serves as a mirror in the past that proves that some Filipinos are not proud of their nationality. We should love our country and not focus only to the flaws, mistakes and imperfections that our country possess. We should also avoid thinking that foreign countries are way better than Phillipines because if we are united and have a strong sense of nationalism in our hearts and minds, Phillipines could be progressive and we could compete with other progressive countries in all aspects. I know that some of you who are reading this might think that this is wishful thinking. But with a leap of faith to young Filipinos, I know that this “impossibe dream” can come true.

studying philippines history is also important. just like what the article said, knowing what happen in the past is very important and the mistake of the past should not repeat it self again. We should know who filipino are at the first place ‘coz we are filipino. We should appreciate what we can do and help each other so that we filiponos will not depend on the other country. 3:00-4:00

this article is very great, because it is true that most of the students are asking the same question as what has been ask by the students in this article. even me, i don’t know why is this subject (philppine history) is still included in my college subject, coz’ before i thought history is just for elementary and high school only. now, by the help of this article i found myself having a bit of interest in studying history particularly the history of the philippines. this article helps a lot for those students who still have questions in thier minds on why philippine history has to be taken as one of thier subjects in school. 😉

As I read about this article, I learn more and understand what the real message of the philippine history subject. I have a vigorous determination to increase my ability to deal with this subject,,actually the message of this article touch my emotion, because I also asked this question more often,,I also wander why do we need to take up this subject even it is not related into our course, but then,I realized that it is also part of our academic abilities as a citizen of this country..I now conclude that if we will not apply this history in our lives,we filipinos will be ignorant in our own Nationalism because some other colonizer didn’t believe in the capacity of every Filipino. Also, history is necessary to adapt in order to produce a new breed to those who believe in his/her NATIONALISM.

For me the importance of Philippine history is important for it because we can be proud of our Philippine heroes. Yes, we can say that past is past we can’t change what happened in the past, but then we’ll realized how significant the past happenings in our past. I can say we should give importance of it, for without it, we can’t have our freedom! and we can say in our history the past Filipinos were not taught their own history. Nowadays, I can say that I’m proud of my Philippine history.

16. Jo Caliph Rivera - August 14, 2008

The love for the country starts in knowing its background and its history. We should go back to the past to understand the development of our nation. To be a Filipino citizen, one should be nationalistic. Being a true Filipino, he or she should show their love for the country, being loyal to it, and its devotion. Studying the History of the Philippines, we will know the true essence of being a Filipino. We stood out from the other nations. We have so many heroes who fight for the freedom of the country. We are rich in resources but we don’t know how to use it wisely. In the Spanish regime, we have been held captives for 333 years. Most of their culture are being embrace by us. Even the corruption was embraced which starts from the Spanish friars and is seen in the present government. Studying history is helping the citizen to be more concern what happen about the past. for example, the question “WHO DISCOVER THE PHILIPPINES?” for some they say MAGELLAN did. But the historians says the NATIVES were. In this controversy, it shows that if we don’t study the past, we will bring the wrong information and we might be passing the wrong ideas. Like the song of “YOYOY VILLAME” which was entitled the “MAGELLAN”. He pointed out that Magellan discovered the Philippines. The lyrics of the song was bared in the mind of the Filipinos but the lyrics was wrong. And it should be corrected. And that’s a simple reason on why we should study our country’s history before studying the history of the foreign countries.

17. Daniel Dumanig - August 14, 2008

I highly agree that “Teaching the HOW’s and the WHY’s of history would train the student to think critically”, because that is what’s lacking with the present generation. Because even though history says, “Whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it and the future generation would be freed from the bondage of tyranny and slavery”, but if the present generation does not reflect with the mistakes of the past and does not act unto it, then history is good for nothing. But if, and only if we change this attitude (bahala na; mamaya na; sila na bahala; wala ako pakialam), then surely there will be a change, because change starts from within a man and not outside a man. So let this change start now with our generation, and let us not blame it to others. Because like what the bible said, “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

It is really not compulsory for us to study Phil. History but we are oblige to do so in order for us to know our root !!
We should know our past in order for us to correct the wrong things that happen and also prevent it from happening again ..
We have no choice because we may not like it or not it is part of our todays living and in the incoming generation !!
We should promote our Philippine History and share it to the young one’s ..

….It’s a wonderful text because it answers most of the querries that is raised by most of the students. As a teacher, how can you make your profession destroy the “colonial mentality” people has?…9:30 am

for me as a student its nice to have philippine history subject its because its always relevant to as filipino to know and to have the knowledge of our past.it is also good to discover philippine history because its enriches and enlighten our mind that whatever mistakes happened in the past our present generation or in the future may not be repeat.

21. donalyn suliguin - August 15, 2008

Yes,its true that studying the subject of Philippine history not useful when applying job but me and my self felt lucky to discover my origin, how and why the Philippines and the people living there is like what we are now.
Philippine history is important to study because i learn a lot about the past of my country how become it is.I also understand a lot what happen the past, because if we dont look back our past we can’t correct the mistake, the lack and give important,to go beyond. And no can repeat the oppression to the Filipino because we learn.
Now I know a lot of history of my country,I appreciate and be proud of my culture,it is unique!and when colonizers controlled philippines over 400 years I learn that not all happens was bad,it also had more benefits to us!and I also developed my self to be nationalistic by using our own product and be proud of it,and i strive more that someday i can give tribute pride to my country by now ill go education. And to my self to be a good Filipino citizen.400

For me, Philippine History is really a boring subject because this subject only talks about the people and events happened in the past. honestly, i don’t care because practically it wouldn’t help me if i would like to apply a job and it wouldn’t help me to be rich…hehehe! But when i enter college and explained to me well the importance of learning history. i realized that learning the things happened in the past is very important because i learned that in the past Filipinos were not taught of their own history rather they taught the history and culture of other country. that’s why Philippine has unique culture because of the cultures that we adapt from other country.

We should know the things happened in the past. for us to know the sacrifices of our hero’s and how they protect our country from the invaders. that we should be proud of.

learning Philippine history is relevant to any courses to strengthen their citizenship and to produce a new breed of Filipinos that has strong sense of Nationalism in their hearts and mind and whatever mistakes in the past are, the present generation would not repeat it.

24. Charlymer Dingal Jr - August 15, 2008

As I have read the article, even I myself are confused in the issue why does Philippine history included in our course; but as I have reflected on my own preception, it is really a must that we are taking up this subject as part of our course, in a way that we are being taught on how to give importance of our history, but is this a must for a person to be able to get a job? My rection to this is that in order to be a true citizen of our country, one must learn how to give importance in our history, in such a way that every individual can be true to his country in serving the best he could do. To be nationalistic is essential for a person to be able to do his duty in a proper and right way. therefore, I can say that Philippine history must be taught for students to be more competitive in handling things and to be able to manage things, for him/her to be a true- blooded Filipino.

25. Vincent Ray Boron - August 15, 2008

it is a very good article.Yes,philippine history could not help us for searching certain job but it is nice to know or to have a knowledge about our history because it makes you proud of being a filipino. For many years that we are a colonized country there were some filipino people such as Dr. Jose P. Rizal who fought for the right of every filipino people and we must know that, because we are a Filipino and we should be proud of. Nowadays, many Filipinos especially student who hate philippine history subject because its too BORING although they are a filipino.filipino heroes were the people who saved as from the foreign colonizers and we must proud of it. To show our respect to them and patriotism we must know our culture and history because studying this subject is very interesting.filipino people should discover their origin.400

Philippine History being a part of the curriculum is really a must be for us Filipinos. Because it’s very awkward to know that we Filipnos are somewhat ” Dayuhan sa sarili nating bayan” . How can we teach the future generation if we ourselves don’t understand and even know about our history? So, let’s not be blind. Accept the reality that we are Filipinos and with that, comes great responsibilities. Remember that history can never be repeated unless we let it happen again. We have to strengthen our nationalistic spirit and broaden our knowledge in Philippine history.

Well, as of now i’m also wondering why students studies about our history?
maybe we need to study about our history because we are filipino citizens and as a filipino we need to know what happens about our country before.
maybe past is past but we are not complete without our past.
we need to study this to know what is the begining of this country not only the begining but also the life of our heroes.
they work hard to fight for our country that for now we have a freedom to choose what we want. because years ago we have not freedom because of the colonizers that came to our country. these are only some of the reason why we need to study about our history…….1:00

Some Filipinos are not proud to be a Filipino, because they don’t know what the early Filipinos had done before. The reason may be that still now, we, students still need to study the Philippine History is to understand deeply our culture and our ancestors, our country and all the values that we may get from the past. We may not use all the lessons in this subject to apply for a job, but we can apply the values that we had learned into present life and wherever we may go, we will always be proud to be a Filipino.

I my self is a pure Pilipino. But, I also dream to go abroad. If I was already there abroad since I was a child, what is the purpose of knowing the past of my country?
Almost all Pilipino knows and want it, and forget the sense of nationalism. As a student, I most know my past! I have to learn what my country’s past. Its not for the grades then forget the lesson, but to listen and follow or make the wrong things happen to right.
What the Pilipino need is to have unity to same Pilipino. Its not because of the past we have, but to change that by the present. Learning the history is knowing your future, not only for knowledge but for building a unite country. 400

34. eddelaine dawn ducusin - August 16, 2008

“Present things are affected on what happened in the past.” I will start my reaction with a quote I got from an article I’ve read about three years ago. I definitely agree on what you’ve posted in your article, specially the lines “FILIPINOS are suffering from NATIONAL AMNESIA” and “We can LEARN from our PAST”. The evidence can be seen by our naked eyes and with our sense of our observation. Whatever resistance I made, it’s definitely the TRUTH. I admit it, sometimes I think that history was boring, very BORING(hehehe) but then I have these feeling of “urge” to learn. It even made me ponder for a while and ask myself, why should I study HISTORY? After an enough time to reflect, I’ve come up with a very satisfying antiphon. . .

History is not narration but it is resurrection. The Philippines, for being such a small place, has a HUGE history. Studying our history is not just studying. Go deeper and THINK. The importance of studying Philippine History is not acquiring knowledge and information but it is owing them a recognition, a deep sense of understanding and a sense of nationalism and respect for the wrenching pain and suffering they have endured, for the passion to bring back the freedom once taken from us and for our sake us well. What do you think was the best motivation they had for themselves when they are fighting with the colonizers? It’s that, they are thinking for their NEXT GENERATION! They are thinking of what will happen for their children in the future if they are still experiencing the pain and suffering they have experienced. Even though, physically we are not part of the past, but in some point, we are somewhat “piece” of it for we are their reasons of their passions. Also what have been investigated can give as the power to imagine the things on what happen in the past without even in that situation. It also enrich us, as a person, as a nation, and as WHOLE!!

Our past is bridge to our future and would make us even better. As what you’ve said, “We learn from our Past”. If we want to understand anything, we must observe its beginning and its development. We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future. By the past we are reassured of our importance; in it we find strength to face the dangers that lie in front of us. And I’ve further realize that “History is who we are and why we are the way we are.”Ö.o

PS:

…^^..nice article!!..Galing mo maam!!..hehe..!!

The article had a point for the mere fact that history should not repeat itself, teaching history is important to us. If you could only imagine the trials the hardships precolonial Filipinos had experienced. Teaching history guides us away from the same mistakes precolonial Filipinos had done before and teaches us the right thing that could free us from the bondage of tyranny and slavery. The article says it all, if you are not well oriented from the happenings from before then we, Filipinos, could fall from the same trick all over again.1:00pm

“Tangkilikin ang sariling atin” a line that connotes about patrionizing our own tradition, our own resources and our own culture. It is in line with knowing our Philippine history.
Teachers taught us about our history, Sibika at Kultura during grade school, Araling Panlipunan in high school and until now in the tertiary education level we still have these lessons. But is there really any relevance of having a subject about Philippine History?
Yes, I do agree it is important. In a practical way of thinking, we must study Philippine History because we are liable for this as a student. We won’t be promoted to the higher year level in college without this subject. we have no choice.
However, it’s not only in an aspect of a “no choice”. We must also study and give significance to Philippine History subject because we are all products of our history. Without knowing our history, we would not know why and how we became Filipinos. We would not know why Jose Rizal is our national hero. We would not know about our past. Eventhough past is past, we can still learn from it. “Ang nakaraan ang magpapatibay sa kasalukuyan”, as what they said. Above all, Philippine History subject develops our love in the country as what they called ‘nationalism’.
Therefore, studying Philippine History is really important. We must engaged on it simply because we are Filipinos.

This article was very true because im proud to be a filipino citizen of this country. And also we must be preserve this tradition and culture to enchance our knowledge ,capabilities and of course, our being a filipino.
As filipino citizen of this country,we must know our history ,origin and also love it.Because we are unique in physical appearance,in intelligent, and etc.

Actually, I am very proud and happy of what my teacher is doing when she is discussing the History subject. She is so active is a sense that she would not allow anyone to attempt to sleep. Eventhough many were saying that History is a boring subject, she refused to stop teaching us the subject rather she was challenge even more to teach us for as what she have said, History always repeats itself and as we all know, we are a true blooded filipinos, then we must be able to learn our past or our history, where we came in, when we became independent, how we fought the colonizers, etc.
There is no reason for us to refuse learning this subject. It is also improper to our teacher’s part if we just sleep, talk, doing improper actions, etc. while she is teaching. It’s an insult to her part.
History subject anyway is not recquired when we apply for a job BUT do you think that when you dont know your history you can easily apply outside? For me, it’s hard because if you yourself don’t know your country’s history, it’s just like, you don’t have nationality.
More importantly, Job is not the first reason why we study History, rather, we are studying this subject for us to know ous past country’s struggle and sacrifices just to guard our country’s pride and honor and also to be independent and not being owned by other countries. 130

The article is great, I mean, wonderful. True. Most of the students taking up history classes think that they just “had” to do it for the sake of their grades and think that its just one of the school’s tactic of making more money from them. But, the truth is, we “have” to learn more about this country we call our home.. 🙂

Yes!!! the subject history must be introduced to the Filipinos especially to the young generation, so that we are aware of what happenned in the past, what are the contributions of our heroes, and how painful for them to live without freedom.
Its true that if we apply for a job, they will not ask us about our history. But studying history subject will help us to understand our origins and we can help contribute to the development of our country. Being a Filipino, we are required to study our own history not because it is necessary but it is a true evidence that we are giving importance to the sufferrings and patriotism of our heroes.

50. christine novie aguirre - August 18, 2008

We need to study our history for us to know the different contribution of our heroes in the past. Our heroes did their best and fight for our country just to have freedom. We should give credit to our heroes for what they did, thats why we need to study our own history. As a youth we should know our own history

51. mae aguirre - August 18, 2008

52. christine novie aguirre - August 18, 2008

We should give importance to our heroes for what they did inorder for us to have total independence from the colonizers By studying our history it simply means that we appreciate the sufferings of our heroes. That’s why we need to study and apply our history in our daily life.We need also to know the different contributions of our hero

Our history is still in a crucial process of credibility since most of the writings about its origin were done by foreigners. Their statements somehow influenced the way we, Filipinos, comprehend the story of our land. Knowing the real happenings, the root of culture and the truth behind the discovery, is a great need for us so that we may be able to give credits to the people who draw the lines for our independence.
Our history tells much of who we really are- inheriting the same blood that runs through our veins. The reality should be taught to every Filipino. We are to discover our ancestors’ way of living and to the situation they had way back to justify our lifestyle and tradition these times. It would be very essential for us, so that we may be able to explain everything with confidence and to give meaning to our origin.
Philippines is indeed a great land to be stepped upon. It has a very rich history that we should be proud of. I just hope that the new generation will continue the tradition and customs a Filipino should possess. Because as what I have observed at this moment, we are slowly forgetting the story of our existence in this land.

It’s nice to hear that someone is concerned of posting articles like this. I agree that almost all of our country’s population is still having this colonial mentality. They prefer to look at those that of foreign than the things that are ours. It’s just so hurting that instead of making our country more progressive, it seems that what is happening now is we are helping our country go down. Where is our devotion for our country now? I concur too that the study of Philippine history plays a great role to the lives of the Filipinos today. It awakens the minds of the Filipinos and teaches us to give value to the sacrifices our heroes had done to gain the freedom we are enjoying now. But with all these teachings, there are still Filipinos who do not give importance to our country’s pasts, how much more if there are no teachers imparting their knowledge about the Philippine history to the youths of today? Thanks to them 😉 It would really be nice if we all have this “Spirit of Nationalism” in us. History will always repeat itself if we’ll not do anything today, let’s help our country 😉

Studying Philippines History subject is a relevance for us.As a filipino citizens we should study for us to be aware in our own history and for us to be not ignore in a sense that we must retrieve what is the unknown term..Is it?but the main thing is we must develop the controuary inevitable side of our own learning in our society and especially in our country..so that the other people can treat us fairly well as well as to their basic status insights to us being a Filipino..400

It’s a nice article..We should really know Philippine history ’cause we’re Filipino. It should be teach to us because there are also few people who didn’t know their history or maybe they forgot it already..Through teaching history we easily understand our origins.
As what our Ma’am Galindo said that we cannot repeat the past but we must learn from it…We should thinks our past, practice our present and creates our future….

61. Daryl Lasat - August 18, 2008

Well, this article is very good especially to us teenagers cause nowadays in reality basis Yes! there are some students who are not interested about history subject and ironic to the situation that they claim that their are Filipino. It is important that we should know our history cause it is part of our present situation now. We have our history as reference in our daily life that we could continue our journey to its end. There is a saying and i quote “Ang sino mang hindi lumingon sa kanyang pinangagalingan ay hindi makakarating sa kanyang paroroonan.” it would some how tell us that we cannot just forget about our past, cause without it all of these things that we have right now will be nothing without our past, even if it is a boring subject for some students who can tell, but if you just think the essence of why do we need to study about this matter and what is the importance of it for us in our daily life, maybe this subjet will become an interesting one. Its a matter of a choice cause all of us has an options to do the right thing. GOD BLESS US ALL. (3:00-4:00pm)-MWF-

.,it is really a fact that studying Philippine history is very boring but with our great teacher ryt now,we find it so interesting! We usually participate in every discussion.
I was able to realize that the past events in our country is very important. For us not to repeat the mistakes of our ancestors, we must have the great knowledge about our history. Through our education and awareness about the past, the value of nationalism is gradually planted in our minds and hearts. As a student, I learn on how to value my nationality and to be proud of it.. I also learn on how to analize the things that is in present, happening in our country.130

Honestly i relly dont like history, evrytime we have a class on it i really felt so sleepy but then for the sake to have good grades i am force to study about it. Yes your right, that our history serves as our guidelines of todays generation. If they were treated like a parrots before why dont we change it and why dont we let ourselves to decide of what we will do and not to depend others(colonizers) as long as we are not violating the rules and regulations, right?!
Why dont us Filipinos cant be proud of our country, why is it that some people dont appreciate the beauty of the Philippines. Philippines is very blessed. Be proud to be a Filipino, learn to appreciate things around you and you will the see the real beuty of it that other country dont have.
…. I am proud to be a Filipino.!

As a student, i do believe that philippine history subject is greatly irrelevant from my course. But focusing on the content of the article, it definitely has a point. Philippine history is somewhat important because learning philippine history molds us filipinos into a responsible and mature citizens and would definitely makes us treasures in our own country. It gives us certain realizations about our cultural origins and transforms our pratical mind into a nationalistic one. Who knows in learning philippine history, we might be the greatest leaders in the Philippines someday.

72. Reah Hazel G. Sanchez - August 19, 2008

Yes,indeed still a relevant… though its not apart of the course we take up… since then a Filipino iots a part of our daily lives because it could help us to know the events that heppens to our country… and we could not deny the fact that we have little contribution to that…

Philippine history demands a new college surcey that fulfills the needs for providing an alternative to the godless,secular-Humanistic teaching which deprives Filipino for realizing theier desteny as the “Christian Light of Asia”.

Beacause the best way to appreciate a country is to live in it and to learn about its history and culture.
The study of Philippine history will correct on impression held by most Filipinos who have only studied their country’s heritage partially.(1:00-2:00)

73. Aiza Tangalin - August 19, 2008

As a student, studying our country’s history is very important.Philippine history is one of the subjects in schools that are teach. As a citizen of the Philippines it is true that we should know the past of our country, where our ancestors came from, and why we have this culture and kind of government now. We back in my High Scool life and Grade School life, I’m very concious why we have this subject. One thing I had learned is we are Filipino so we should study our history whether we like it or not. As times goes by, I learned to love this subject for I know that the past is very important in the future, the wrong doings before will corect at the present.

74. mae kristine a. octaviano - August 19, 2008

Yes it is true…..we often ask is this subject is really connected to are course? or it has any releavance for are course or just a requirement?…i always flanked my Philippine History exams before.. never was interested about my country’s past, tired of the magellan story, tired listening to the beliefs, culture, of our ancestors…..but when you get older and appreciate more of what has become of the Philippines, your freedom, your people… you appreciate what history has drawn out for you! coz’ History is determined by fate….and history will remain and be preserved…because Philippine history is in our blood and it is for us for being a proud Filipino…..Philippine history also gives knowledge about past that in present we should do the wright thing…..because in history we can learn about the mistakes they done years or century ago….Studying Philippine history made Filipino’s unique and honorable one…..

There are students who like Philippine History but there are also students who do not like it,and they have different reasons why they like it or not.
Honestly speaking,I’m one of those students who were telling that, why we need to study Philippine History? It’s not one of the requirements if we are going to apply a job!I can’t earn money out of it,right? That’s what I’m thinking even right now.
But I realized that it’s not about the people, places or etc. written in the books or in the Philippine History books,it’s about the lessons that we can get from it.
Philippine History subject is a boring subject especially if the teacher is also boring. But if the teacher can handle his/her class without making his/her students bore,I think Philippine History subject is an exciting and interesting subject. If we just listen attentively,I know that we will learn a lot of things that will strengthen our nationalism.
We should study Philippine History for us to know the sacrifices of the people before and to bear in mind that whatever mistakes in the past would not be repeated in the present.
We should always remember that studying one thing has its own purpose/purposes.

77. Nino V. Miedes BSed-2 - August 19, 2008

Number of students said that taking up History subject is an additional pain for them because they are paying for it and they are obliged to attend this boring and sleepy type of subject. History subject is like bringing back the remains of the dead from its graveyard. We are trying to know what were the significant happenings that marked the Philippine history and also mysteries in the past which is true that we cannot change anymore. Studying the past as major concern of History subject answers the question why is it that our present situation is like this.We are like trying to open a mysterious box and finding out what are the secrets behind.
Almost 50% of the students think that History subject is an additional burden for them. The problem doesn’t lies in the subject but in the students. Why is this so? Students are very much concerned on the money they are paying for. They are not after of the relevance of the subject. They take it for the sake of the diploma they will get in the future.
Actually, Philippine History subject is a big help for us students. Why? Because we are learning from the past experiences of our “ninunos”. It actually help us to develop the values of patience, determination, hard-work, intelligence, and creativity in which we can use in our daily life. Honestly, I didn’t find my history subject as boring because I strongly believe that it benifits me a lot.
I do hope that students will read this comment and they may realize that history subject gives a lot of advantages to us especially now that we are still young and we are still on the road of our life.

yes, why do we need to study philippine history? i really questioned it to myself when i was in high school, lots of memorizations! come to think of it, how will i memorize all those dates, names and events in just a short time..? and i really considered it as a boring subject..

but as time flies, i learned to like it’ but not yet “love it”… now, i could say that studying philippine history is important a fact that we are Filipinos living in the philippines. we must learn and try to like it, because our present time is the fruit of our history. why would not we like our history where all things begin.? in studying the history we learn past mistakes thus we won’t do it again in the present. we use our history as our basis to improve those not so good things happened in the past. another example are our philippine heroes, they belong to our past and they contributed a lot to our country’ as a show of honor and respect we comemorate them and learn more about them. lastly, come to think of it’ in the future WE will also be history, don’t we like to be remembered ??? don’t we wish to be part of the future’s study about history?

the article was about the relevance of studying the Philippine History. For me it is important to know some facts about the history of our country, because as a Filipino we should be aware of our history and we should know how our heroes before alloted so much effort for the freedom of our country. It also boosts our spirit of being a nationalist knowing the essenceof being a true Filipino. 930

It’s nice to read that article for it is really usual to some of us who are always asking of the relevance of history subject. If we think that it is not anymore related to us true- blooded FILIPINOS, its wrong. Even we can’t change the past but it would be a great help for us to make the future better because we can learn a lot from it by improving those erroneous things we’ve done from the history.1:00

As I read this article i am also questioned that why Philippine History is important to learn and i found out the answers it this question.

First we are a true blooded filipinos. Second whether we like it or not we should study our history because not all informations is true. It is the other historians point.

For more practical answer we filipinos are known to be nationalistic and we are also rich in culture. We have a lot more to discover to our country.

THAT’s ALL! Tnx! ^^~

The importance of philippine history subject is that we should know some historical events happened here in the philippines that we could learn and also the cause/effects of that historical events.
The basic lifestyle of a historical persons and how they relate to other persons, how they respect and develop their different tribes and cultures.
The persons who conquer the philippines and developed their ideas/things to our country.

86. Suzanne S. Misagal - August 19, 2008

Well, you’re totally right. This field of study is still relevant. I do believe that it is still a must for us Filipinos to know or to have knowledge about our history. Eventhough we are now in a new generation, we should still give value/importance to the happenings in the past and the people behind it for without them, we won’t experience the freedom that we are actually enjoying nowadays.
Learning/studying our History enhances our thinking skills. It makes use of our analysis. It also makes us use our critical thinking which I thought would be a great help in our growing-up. I also agree that studying History should not only stop with WHO,WHAT, WHEN and WHERE. Indeed, it will go further to “WHY’s and HOW’s”. By such, we would know the values that were practiced and given emphasis by the native Filipinos that became their weapon in facing the colonizers. Also, with the learnings we had, we would be guided in our actions as citizens and as part of the society.
I also agree that colonial mentality destroys our national identity. This matter has been one of the reasons why our country is not that progressive. We are always depending to the foreign people. We don’t have this so called “originality’. And our history might be a great help into the realization of what it means to be a real FILIPINO. We would recognize the value of nationalism and live it by heart.

History must not only end on the information about the past. It must not only limit on the positive side. History plays a big role in developing an individual. The application of the lessons learned and be able to appreciate the negative side of history may come up to an effective learning. Since it tells us the past and the works of our heroes,it must serve as our guide to fully understand the things that we should do in the future. It must be our molder where we should develop our nationalism and patriotism to strengthen our country. Following the steps of these great people ( may not include the personal presence in a battle) may lead to some changes on the mentality of the Filipinos. Today, the youth of this generation are taught of new ideas including the ways of the western countries. Through teaching history, they will be able to know and relate on the efforts of these Filipinos who strive hard to finally have freedom and democracy. 400

A big YES will also my answer to those students who ask the same question as “Is Philippine History relevant to our course?”.Why I said so?Because for me,to know my own origins and past things will satisfy my own being as a true-blooded FILIPINO!I admit, I used to criticize some attitudes of my co-Filipinos but still I believe that we still have the uniqueness which other nationalities don’t have.Although this subject don’t coincide some facts on my course, still I loved to learn from it.I can still remember what my present history teacher said, studying this subject is significant for us to be able to answer other people if ever they’ll ask us about our history or our background.I believe so, for it is a shame on our part if we couldn’t answer that single question when in fact we lived in that thing for so many years.Studying such thing as Philippine history will surely mold me into a person with strong acceptance and knowledge about my past events, dates and past life.I don’t care if I would take much time in learning these past things as long as I feel the contentment and fulfillment in my life, then I’ll surely go for it!Whatever will be,will be.This is my own decision! This is my own life!

It is important for us to study philippine history because it is part of being a filipino citizen. Eventhough our country was re-discovered by Magellan, we are still responsible for our country. It is also important for us to study philippine istory in order for us to preserve our culture because we filipinos have a unique culture compared to others. 3:00pm

+what a VERY meaniningful article. All i can say is, there will and is always a need for us to know our own history for us to become aware of what has happened to our country in the past years. It is very true that this subject don’t really have any connection with my course and to my future profession. But learning such things is one of our simple way on showing our love for our dearest country. Upon knowing such things, we can learn many values which will be very useful in our daily lives. We must pay tribute to our country by respecting and honoring our history. Let’s love our own country. Be proud to be a REAL Filipino!

91. Mary Elaine M. Eboña - August 19, 2008

my comment is,as filipino or as a youth we must study our philippine history eventhough it is past happening, because it is part also of our ancestor’s time.so we must respect them and we must be thankful to them and especially to our heroe’s because without them our country will not be known as colonized country and maybe our country will have no freedom until now then it comes that our co-filipino will always became slave under the hand of spaniards. Then we cannot deny that we can ask question to ourself like what is the past happening in our country ?so this is one example that can make us curious.3:00-4:00 pm

I also agree that that studying History should not only stop with WHO,WHAT, WHEN and WHERE.
Philippine History is a study of the growth and development of Filipino society from its earliest beginnings to the modern period. It aims to familiarize us students with the development of political, social and cultural trThe Department of History seeks to provide students with an understanding of the broad foundations of historical studies through a critico-theoretical approach and prepares them for teaching, research, and graduate studies.
It seeks to provide students with an understanding of the broad foundations of historical studies through a critico-theoretical approach and prepares them for teaching, research, and graduate studies that helps us students to be more expressive in our own thoughts and opinions for us to be involved in this kind of heritage. It’s really important for everyone to know the history that shows important events and people who were
involved that gives name in our country.
I realize that though it’s hard for me to study history I realize the importance of it as a Filipino Citizen. It’s really important for everyone to know the history that shows important events and people who were
involved that gives name in our country.
I realize that though it’s hard for me to study history I realize the importance of it as a Filipino Citizen.
Moreover to that, I also appreciate the things that our teacher taught us because it helps also to acknowledge that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present. The analysis and interpretation of history provide an essential context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics, and cultures. Understanding the present configuration of society is not the only reason to study the past; history also provides unique insight into human nature and human civilization. By demanding that we see the world through the eyes of others, that we develop a sense of context and coherence while recognizing complexity and ambiguity, and that we confront the record not only of human achievement but also of human failure, cruelty, and barbarity, the study of history provides us with a richly-textured, substantive framework for understanding the human condition and grappling with moral questions and problems. History is essential to the traditional objectives of the persons of the quest for wisdom and virtue.

Historians seek not only to explain historical causality–how and why change occurs within societies and cultures. They also try to account for the endurance of tradition, understand the complex interplay between continuity and change, and explain the origins, evolution, and decline of institutions and ideas. History is also distinguished by its singularly broad scope. Virtually every subject has a history and can be analyzed and interpreted in historical perspective and context; the scope of historical inquiry is bound only by the quantity and quality of surviving documents and artifacts and thta’s why we need to give importance about it and should never take it for granted.

I believe in the saying “past still affects the future”…
so i believe that learning history is still needed for us to undrstand many things and history has something to do with our present situation now. I agree in the selection because it tells that to study history we should not only memorize the names, dates, places, but to go beyond it. To understand it for us to know our own origins and able to appreciate those heros of yesterday. and also history can also help us to correct the mistake that is made in the past and not to repeat it in the future.
generation to generation, has an important part in history that whill remain forever in our hearts that even in future. some says “HISTORY repeats it self,” yes, it can be.. but not exactly the same as what happend in history. Though you can correct it but can never repeat
it. 1:00

96. Rose Anne Cecille del Rosario - August 20, 2008

Yes, I agree that studying History is still relevant for us as Filipino people because studying History can refresh our minds. We all knew that since elementary we have been studying history and as time goes by those what we had learned from the past can expand. Not only that, studying History can also help us to remember the values and traits that our early ancestors had. It may be good or bad but still it is been inherited to us. Filipino people also need to study history for us to know our whereabouts because Philippine History is complicated because like what you said we had been colonized by other countries and they did not teach us our own history but perhaps their own ones were the one that had been teached to us that is why lots of events happened during in the past that was stated in our history.
Like what you had said “colonial mentality destroys our national identity”, yes it is true. As we all know colonial mentality is a systemic feelings of inferiority within some societies or peoples. For me, having a colonial mentality doesn’t help our country to progress, but helping other countries to be progressive. We must give importance to our own country for it is the only country where we can rely on.
We must be proud of who and of what we are right now. We must also be proud that we are Filipino despite of those discriminations that were thrown to us. Love our country as the same way as you love yourself.

In this issue, I know I am one of the student who could react just like that maybe I’m curious of what philippine history gave importance in my life and how this subject help me in my future generation. But then, I realize that we are Filipino so must strengthen our nationalism. Some student still asking and me also “why we should study all about in this person? Do they have study all about us? Anyway, we don’t know or even see that person so why it should be? “. But now, I realize in that way in my own question of why we should be now I know that it is a process of refreshing our mind of what Philippines all about.

In this history subject I thought it is BORING and more found out as a difficult. But with Maam Galindo I knew that not all history is a Boring subject. I’m So thankful now, I found out that I am improving myself to learn more about Philppine history. And I want to encourage my co-Filipinos to aware in this subject. Maybe it can’t help to our job but it can help to protect our nationalism and as a Filipino inspite of negative thoughts all about us of other country. So we must say “We are Proud to be a Filipino”.

Although it is not important in our job but we as a Filipino must know our own history because it is ashame in our part when other people ask us about our history and we do not have anything to say.Yet, we know the history of the other country like in the western countries. And it is also the way of teaching our present and coming generation to be nationalistic and to free from suferring in colonial mentality over the past 400 years.

Yes, it is not important in our job but it is the way of refreshing our culture and remembering the sacrifices of our heroes just to free us from colonizers and to commit our freedom.

This article was good. The reasons presented were true as well as the question raised by the student which was all about the significance of studying Phil. History up to now. Yes, past is past and we must live by the present times and move on to the future. But, I believe that without looking back to our past and giving importance to the times before , we wouildn’t be where we are now. Studying Phil. History for me is a need for everyone to be aware of how rich our country was , how wealthy it is and how prosperous it would become if we’ll all just be united and living with the same spirit of natinalism. i agree to the article and hope there will be more articles like this. 🙂

I think this subject can help me in some different reasons. Even though HISTORY is NOT my favorite subject, I have to take up this subject to be able for me to graduate from this institution.
Our history can help us to think all the events in the past that cannot happen again. History can help us to think how the people conquer our land. This may help us in thinking how did we get those different things and where did it came from. This subject can help some of those archeologists.
It is important for me, the subject Philippine History, even though I cannot use this in my profession, because learning Philippine History is still and always be a relevant.

that’s very true.. i agree with you, Filipinos are really like parrots patronizing and copying the things they don’t understand. Filipinos are soo keen on copying the style of foreign entities. Though to be honest, i did ask that question in the past. But i realized that teaching the filipino history to us students is very relevant.. I helps us realize to love our own country and be rooted to the culture and values of our country.

For me, Philippine History Subject thus, helps us…

For a practical reasoning, history is not needed in our daily activities..
But, the concept on the article tells us that in order NOT to foget the struggle of our Filipino Ancestors, we need to learn and to know the event for the sake that we could at least appreciate by simply being acquainted especially to our Heroes because probably, we are not on our Lives today if not because of them…

-Philippine History is important because they were different events happen during 350-400 years and which is still full of questions to be answered. Generations is still relevant to the Philippine History Subject.
-About 350-400 years, the philippines was controlled and colonized by other country, we have been forced to do what the colonizers says because we have been slaved by them. we have no guns and materials to fight back to them because they are more populated and updated.
-Until years have past, they were some people who try to fight back to the colonizers and that people were called “heroes”. because of this, we commit our independence to them.
-Even the years, dates, places and events is still important to study of each and every students. Because this could be our guides to us in the years to be past. 9:30

The Relevance of the Philippine History Subject

“ I thought Emilio Aguinaldo is as noble as I first knew him. But when I learned that he is behind the death of Bonifacio, things grew differently”

*Philippine history is a stupid subject. Yes that’s how I view it. I don’t want to hear and learn our history because it’s quite disappointing. About our heroes then later you have dissension if they’re really deserving to be called as heroes. Damn it, it is a sad reality, but it is the fact and neither of us can escape it.

“Philippine history is like discovering and unfolding a uniquely blended heritage.”

Well as a consolation, even though I hate the content of the subject in general, I learned some things that are worth sharing for. And these are the following.
Few years ago, when I was at my primary years I really love this subject. It’s exciting; knowing your pas, meeting your ancestor in the books, learning some geographical data and a whole lot more.
They say knowing our country’s history is like discovering and unfolding a uniquely blended heritage. The origin of the Philippines from folkloric, to biblical and scientific basis; blimey! It’s really awful that these theories do oppose each other.
Well it seem to be likely that I’m enjoying it, from various flora and fauna that were evident in the country and a few of them can be found only in some of the remotest islands of the country, that is pretty amazing.
Then there came the human intervention, first to reach our shores either by sailing/walking (through land bridges) were Negroid people, then the Indones after then were the Malays. Imagine that, without having them here, would you think we’ll be here too?
Seven thousand and a hundred and an excess of seven scattered islands, diversed each with distinct ethnic tribes plus different dialect, wow! Too many to unite as one. But it did, it was on 1521 when the destiny of an unknown group of islands in the Eastern part of the world was determined. A great voyager accidentally rediscovered it and with that, started an era of the unification of that archipelago.

“ His feat is composed of three ruggedly looking ships aboard were near to death men of him”.

Yes you’ve got it right in your mind, the unknown archipelago is the then called Mayi (according to Chinese) and presently Philippines, our country and that great voyager mentioned, it is no other than Magellan. As harsh as we think of them, but without them RP could not have impart some major parts that we have had at the moment.

“Heroes are lucky there good deeds overcome their bad doings”

The colonization of the Philippines took more or less 44 years before Spain finally decided to take it as one.
Those were the turbulent days as far as 19th century Philippine is concern. A period, which was characterized by massive hispanization: slavery, abuses, taxes, discrimination, extortion and other forms of oppression.
This unjust colonization, further lead to the rise of nationalism, a national consciousness that aims for a inclusion of the Philippines as a province of Spain, and later on developed to aim for a nationhood.
This brought forth revolts and series of bloody struggles to liberate our country from the clutch of our colonizers. From this national movement sprung prominent leader later considered as heroes and heroine.
These individuals had bore much sufferings and at last their efforts left to be unwasted as they have partially succeed on the 12th of June 1898.
Behind this were people of great charm, chivalry-like charms that made them heroes for lifetime.
But through this subject (Philippine History) my eyes were open to the reality surrounding around us. In the pessimistic view its just like:

“Ancient scientists were not that bright people, they’re just fortunate, they’re first to discover something that is unknown when the world was still young.”

To heroes this could be applicable as they’re lucky that there misdeeds were hidden from the knowledge of the people that salutes them or if they knew they’re too lucky there misdeed weigh lighter than there patriotic deed.
This thing proves to be so true when apply it to Aguinaldo, when I first met him in my grade one History book (Sibika at Kultura) my being appreciated him very much, “wow this man is the first president of our country, how brave could he be? I wish I could be like him too”.
For ten years I assumed I was right, but then I discovered that my appreciation doesn’t justify too much. From chapter 6 of my History 1 book authored by Ma. Christine Halili, I found out that he was behind the death of one of my model hero, Andres Bonifacio; and things grew differently from that time on.

“I don’t hate the subject its just that I can’t accept and consume the fact directly”

And that’s it, as a summary the relevance of the Philippine History subject aside from getting a humorous discussion is that it gives you and inevitably factual matters that will surely ignites your mind into a tumultuous reality.
I’m not saying that I hate the subject, its just that I find it a hard time eliminating the things that I grown up to and finding it all wrong. It’s hard to accept a fact that bites.
One thing for sure this subject teaches me, to let go of the past, if on the way to the future there are errors to be corrected I shouldn’t be afraid to accept it, errors are errors and fact is fact. What’s the use of this subject if don’t use them to fixed it.

“Errors are errors and facts are facts”.

Lastly, Philippine History is a wonderful subject. It is worth learning for. It explain events, culture, division and even conflict.

*For clarification purposes:
The feeling or the word being used/expressed in this sentence is the opinion of the author/writer. This should not prevent everyone from arguing.
“Opinion is subject for argumentation”.

I believe that history subject is still and always be important to be part of the curriculum. Not only because it is our responsibility to know the people whom we have our freedom and our life but most importantly to learn the mistakes of our part in order to avoid from doing it again. One example of mistakes in the past that brings conflict at present in Mindanao is the war in Mindanao that if we Mindanaoans mind or care to be aware of the story behind will never be at peace with our fellow settlers (Christian and Muslims) and will not understand the present events. Our Muslim brothers claim for the land of their ancestors, which in history was ceded to U.S by the Spaniards. They claim for the Ancestral Domain in ways where the rights of Christians and natives of Mindanao who settle even before the Muslims were not considered. The Muslims wanted to separate because according to them, they are discriminated in their own land. It’s history that brought discrimination up to present. Muslims appear to have negative image because in divide-and rule tactics of war by the Spaniards, the native were taught that Muslim/Moro are bandits and this belief was brought down up to the present. If lessons of history were not taught, maybe now I could not stand on my belief that MOA should not be signed. 3:00-4:00 p.m.

I agree to the content of the article about Philippine history. We Filipinos must give importance to our history. And for me, we are very lucky that we are taught about our history because through that we could know the different struggles that the Filipinos went through when our country was colonized by the Spaniards. We should also give importance to the people who risk their lives to fight for our country. And through knowing our history we could improve many things to make our country progress for the years to come. Learning the Philippine history is a very important thing for us Filipinos.

I,myself do fall asleep during your class ma’am.. hihi’,. We are really colonized, as said though FILIPINOS are a mixed culture. And as a filipino, I am interested of knowing my origin and avoid the path that leads me to discriminate my own nationalism. Good day!

Importance of Philippine History?

Yes. Philippine history to the part of each Filipino is very important. It is so because Philippine History provides us adequate information of what was the activities happened in the past. Eventhough History cannot applied when we apply for a job but definitely history gives us and learned us to be able to realize the really importance of it.

It is unfortunate that a vast number of Filipino laymen lack interest or understanding of Philippine history. This may have been brought about by an inadequate background in history and a general tendency on the part of the people to be less conscious of the value of the past to their present life. Or, maybe, such ignorance or apathy may have resulted from the dearth of materials, especially on local history which is closer to the hearts and minds of the people.

I think that history should be relevant in the present time. I don’t think that the pre hispanic period is not interesting, the concept of government actually flourished in that time, it is generally federal considering the fact that the concept of “baranggay” was introduced that time. it started with these little communities with leaders. it is the time when the culture of the philippines is purely native until the spanish came.

You should look at it this way, within the span of 300+ years of spanish regime, there were lot of customs that were assimilated and adapted by the filipinos, which is still manifested in the present time. there are negative things and positive things.

History should teach us to change what has been done in the past that aren’t right, it should be applied in the present times. We maybe learned from the past but we do not apply it in the present.

I am proud being a Filipino!!! 400-gween baclaan Section:BSA-1C

About the importance of Philippine history
I conclude that learning Philippine history is becoming to be knowledgeable person
because by reading it we know how they live in the past and how to survive under of colonizers
and by learning the Philippine history the natives living in the past knows how to trade or barter like the galleon trait which they use to trade.when you apply for a job there is a posibility that job your working is connected to the past400

Honestly, Philippine history for me is a boring subject. Just imagine memorizing events, people, dates etc. It really adds boredom on my part. But, with the help our energetic History teacher, it made me interested of certain things that had happened during colonization of different races in our country. It made me think of how early Filipinos were treated by he colonizers. Especially when we were in the hands of Spaniards. How could they do that to us? Where in fact we treated them well when they arrived in place. Its unfair for us. On the other hand, we should thank them for bringing Christianity in the Philippines. Cause without them, ’till now, we are ignorant of our true GOD.

126. kastiene casten - August 21, 2008

i now understand why we have to study Phil.History..to be aware of what happened in the past,to know our origin and for us to be more wiser, not to do what the Filipinos did when they were colonized..and when we apply a job we can still apply or use things that is now a history or things they used in the past..we must be proud being a Filipino.but to those who has been influenced by the culture of other country whatever they do or whatever happen to them they will always be a Filipino, maybe not in physical but in their own blood they are a Filipino..sometimes some Filipinos tolerates the other Filipino who acts like a foreigner and some is proud of them that they keep on telling anyone that their relatives grew up in other country and they really like a foreigner the way they act, talk and their mannerism,we must not do that instead we must let them realize that they are Filipino and they must act like Filipinos and be proud of it whatever it takes.if they really don’t know it we can teach them or help them learn step by step..

I definitely agree w/ this statement, that learning our history here in the Pilippines is really a must for us Filipinos especially for us students who would be the future leaders of this country.
We must be proud of being a Filipino and a Product and part of our history!!1:-}May God bless us in our future studies about our past,,,,…

There is a need for us students to study Philippine History for us to trace our origin.Being a filipino, we have to know everything from the past to fill in some of the blanks in our life.Studying Philippine History is also one way of showing our love for the country. It is also one way of valuing all the sacrifices done by our ancestors.Studying this subject is like taking us to the past and making us experience the events and learn something out of it.Even if I feel bored studying it , I always keep it in my mind that everything in this world has its own purpose.400

129. rozel busine - August 21, 2008

I agree to you ma’am that Filipinos were not taught of our own Philippine History. Teaching us like parrots, we were taught of other country’s history. I agree that our fellow Filipino ancestors were taught to memorize things without making them understand what they are memorizing. It is so sad to know that our fellow foreign countries would label us as uneducated people. But despite all these, I am happy that Philippine History became a part of the school’s curriculum already. Filipinos, nowadays, are being taught of our own history already. With this, we would be awaken of all the abuses that other country did to us. We would learn to appreciate the efforts of our ancestors. We would develop that sense of nationalism within our hearts and minds. Despite all the criticisms that other foreign countries had for us, at least now, we have something to be proud of. Though there were a lot of times that Filipinos were so down and defenseless, with all these, it helped us to gain that courage to fight and defend ourselves and our country. Slowly, process by process, Filipinos will learn to be proud of themselves. Although we have nothing much to be proud of, being proud to be a true blooded Filipino is something which other people could not step up of. 130

Our history as a Filipino is a must to be know in a fact that we are a Filipino and no one can change that fact.Every Filipino is obliged to know about our history. From our history we can see the mistakes of our ancestors that we can change in our generation. We can get many values from the past that in the present is not implement. From our past we can state the difference between the past and present and it is very important.400

131. norjoda hajm - August 21, 2008

We need to know about our history, because we are pure filipino. This is one , way you can show being nationalistic, but the main reason is whatever the mistake before in this genaration may not repeat….If ever the past events will happen again and again we know what do we do.400

132. Nessa Ibacarra - August 21, 2008

I agree with the opinion and stand of Ma’am Galindo here. I believe that there is still a need for the youth and everyone else to learn about our history due to so many reasons. One, what if a foreigner ask us what is the history of our country and what makes it unique or different from other countries,it would really be so shameful if we can’t answer these simple questions. For me before we learn other countries’ culture, we should know first ours.Another, I agree that the solutions of our ancestors to their problems in the past may also answer the problems that we encounter now.Third, for me in order for a counry to move forward, the country must have the strong foundation of nationalism within its individuals or citizens. And this nationalism that I mean can also be learned from our History subject. These are just some of the reasons why it is still important to learn this subject.

133. canales, jeffrey - August 21, 2008

Regarding this issue, I can say that learning and knowing the importance of Philippine history is still and very relevant to each one of Filipino students regardless of one’s course as the knowledge we learn from it would determine the essence of our identity as Filipino students differnt from other students of other countries. It gives us a big idea of who we are and what should we do in order to retain the true essence of being a Filipino and what we can do to improve our country based on our true identity, not of the influences of other countries.

134. Arcylie R. Acabado - August 21, 2008

Philippine history is a potential tool to instill the spirit of naionalism and patriotism, especially at a time of political disunity and sluggish economic growth. What we nned is to kbow the historical truth about what really happened to uoour counry in how we have been exploited, and ruled and urned one against each other to he point of hating and killing each other for many generations.

This echoes Rizal’s earlier observation: “in order to read the destiny of the people, it is neccessary to open the bookof heir past” But what sort of books shall we open if this id bristling with half-truths and downrights lies?

As a people we cannot develop or advance unless we have a clear image of ourselves, an honesat understanding of our past and a collective will to resist foreign dictation and to rely on our capacity and resources to bring about social justice, peace, and prosperity in our land.

Well for me, studying Philippine History Subject is a relevant thing for us student, taking this thought from the article, “The fact that we are a true blooded Filipinos, the fact that every generation was and will always be a product of history, history will always be a relevant subject.”. It’s very interesting to study our own history, because it can help us to become an open-minded person, to realize how did we have our own culture, own practises. Studying History Subject intoduced me to those people who help our country to develop and be discovered by the other counties. So therefore, studying history will guide me to handle or use my life not on a useless way,but on a relevant way, so I will make the most out of it and i will make my own history.

I agree that studying Philippine History is still and will always be relevant to us.Not just because we are students that’s why we have to study it but because we are Filipinos. And as a Filipino citizen it is our duty to learn about past events that happen in our country. And even though it is not related to the career that we pursuing still it may help us to become a better person.Definitely we will not be hired in a job when we study history but studying history is another way of appreciating our culture and what our heroes done for our country.History open our minds on what a Filipino can do for the sake of the country.Through History we can be more responsible to the country where we are living.

I wrongly believe that the study of history is just a test of my memory’s power. Now I know how important it is.History gives us knowledge about the past that helps us to understand the present and prepare for our future. It is also interesting to study history because it can make us proud of our own heritage and culture.Studying different achievements and aspirations of people and thier experiences before is a study of life’s teachings.Life for me is looking backward and moving forward, therefore history is part of living. As a student and a leader I must use history on a day-to-day living.Thank you for the very good article Ms.Galindo-you wake me up!

as a freshman college student, it is still best to know our history so that my generation will know what should be the best direction in going forward. for me, philippine history serves as a guide because you can see how some filipinos fight for our freedom. we are under the spain for like 300 years and suddenly we regain our freedom because of our brave heroes. we should be proud of it. and my challenge as a filipino is to retain its freedom by doing simple things. simple thing like, using our native products instead of imported ones.

Before I believe that learning history has no relevance to my course. As I now I’m studying Philippine history in order for me to pass the subject that had given by the school for me to proceed to the other year.
As a matter of fact we are so lucky that we were taught about our history. That we could know were we are from and what are those things that make us proud of being Filipino.
I agree that studying our own history strengthened the spirit of nationalism. For instance,we can know how our heroes fight for our flag and by that we could honor our flag in exchange to the “dugo at pawis na isinugal ng mga bayani”.

History for me is still relevant. Because it may not help me to find a job, but it will help me to change what is past. I am proud to be Filipino because even if other countries under estimate us, instead of we lose hope, underestimating us is one of the key to our success because we do our best to prove to them that they are wrong. And for me, it is required to teach Philippine history to all Filipino(especially the children and youth) to plant in our mind that our history is important to us especially when we want to know what is the past of our country.

This is a nice article. I could not deny that this is one of the question I keep on asking everytime I feel bored studying history. And I guess the little interest that the students give to this subject is becoming a problem. Our hearts is not into it that is why some of the students take for granted history subject and as a result they fail the subject. Maybe they also make the way of teachings more interesting so that we student can appreciate the real essence of learning Philippine history. I believe encouragement and interest will start on those people who are teaching us this subject.

Studying the history of our nation directs us into understanding the development of our nation.Although we could never change our past, but still knowing this is such a great thing.Past could be our basis of action in the present in order to give rise into a better future. The love of country begins from knowing its history. The history of our land inspires us to appreciate more the uniqueness of our nation among the diff. Asian nations.studying the history of our country builds the spirit of nationalism into one’s selves.

We are captivated and motivated by the colonizers before but we gained value from them which we always hold on.(discipline). Heroes is our cultural heritage and that their contributions will always be exists. Nowadays, we should be defined as their nobility as we continue our identity of being a Filipino and not an advocate of destruction nor harm. We struggles from political rights and fight freedom to the colonizers but then Filipinos were all ready to seize victory. It gives us a responsibility for the future well-being of our nation. Time renew, history brings us aspiration and promotes nationalism which improves the belonging of people beyond the community as well as the development of loyalty in our country.
In dealing with these things, past will never be changed but information will sharpen our knowledge leading to progress.

It will always be a relevant not only in our course but also in our life, it will be a big shame on our part if we don’t know the origin and hitory of our motherland the fact that we are a true blooded Filipino.Right now we can’t deny the fact that many Filipino would rather go to abroad and leave their wife/husband,their children back home, misses those happy & important occations w/ the family just to earn higher wage…Learning the origin and history of our motherland will help build nationalism in us,
teach us to love more our country and make us realize that Philippines is worth fighting for, worth loving for and worth living for.

This article is great. It really helps me to realize how important to study the Philippine History or how relevant it is.But I can’t deny the fact that studying history is really difficult, so many words that needs to memorize most especially the names, dates and places.Studying this subject is not really boring at all but it is interesting. Now, im starting to discover more about our history, and as a Filipino we are part of it.I also believe that learning about Philippine History can strenghten our nationalism of being a Filipino.

good article!!!I can say,it is still very important to study history. Honestly studying phil. history is really a boring topic. One time i asked myself, why we have this boring subjects?,do we really need this? nah! i don’t think so. But when the time comes i realized the importance in this subject. It comes-up on my mind that wether we like it or not, as we Filipino we need to learn all of this topics. Well for us to know all the answers and explinations that we always ask to ourself. Like for example why we are like this?,where we came from? and etc. All those questions that the our history only can answers.History itself is very relevant. We cannot out this as what we want. And the used of studying phil. history is for us to know and recall the happenings in the past though we could not change it. We should be thankful that we have this oppurtunity that we have this subjects though we cannot used this when we apply a jobs. Atleast by this we have the knowledge in our mind. And also by this informations we already have the ability of acceptance in our culture, religions and etc.

152. Martizano, Darlene Mae - August 21, 2008

Indeed, when we seek for our jobs, we don’t need to say the names of many different heroes who fought for our country’s freedom. We don’t even need it in paying our debts and in buying our daily needs and food to fill in our stomaches. It might be because our own characteristics, personalities and physical appearances already speak of our history.
People living in one nation really need to know their country’s history. The history of where they came from and the history of their own race. Our country has been subjugated of different countries. One of it was Spain which colonized us for 333 years. They haven’t taught us of our own culture, instead, they put into our minds that we are INDIOS which are incapable of doing something better. This has been one of the reasons of the slow development of our national unity and it took a combination of several factors to bring about national consciousness. Some of it were the common grievances against the abuses of the Spaniards, the opening of the Philippines to world trade and the execution of GOMBURZA. Spaniards had done many injustices to Filipinos but amidst of it, Filipinos had been able to endure it for as long as the colonizers did.
History has been one of our subject areas so that we can correct the mistakes of the past; strengthen our nationalism; and be able to know that we Filipinos are really great people and uncomparable. All the things that happened in our history remained as the day-to-day scenario of the different lives of many Filipinos. Our history is meant to be remembered; meant to be inculcated in the hearts and minds of each and every Filipino. And we should remember that every todays will be a part of our history; and that, itself, speaks the importance of studying history.1pm-2:30pm

In fact we are really a true blooded FILIPINOS and whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it. Undeniably studying & learning Phil.history is very significant and relevant for we are Filipinos and we are living in the Phil.so we have the know the roots or the origins of our own people, their lives and every bit of our contry’s past. Besides, history is history and inevitably the details & facts that make up our history are the very ground of how everything came to be in this present time.

Philippine History Subject is relevant because it does teaches us to be nationalistic. From this Subject we also learn to think critically, we become more concern of the things happening in our country. Through this, we could erase or delete the history of the colonizers before. Yes, this subject merely talks and discusses about the past but from those happenings, we learn,we’re aware and we can make a move to correct everything that happened in the past. We can change and help our country to be developed. We can show the whole world that Philippines can stand and Philippines can be a better country.

I do agree on this article because every Filipinos should know all about the past. All of us, filipinos, need to know about our history simply because we are Filipinos. If we don’t have any knowledge about our history, we can’t correct every wrong things in the past, we can’t give the next generations good examples. Studying the Philippine history shows our love for our country. And lastly, We study this because we are citizens of the Philipines. We should know our history because from there, we learn many things, we can discover how rich our culture is, and we discover how should we be proud of being a Filipino.

Though our history won’t be asked when we apply for a job (as said in the article), i do believe that we still need to study it along with our chosen course. unlike the past generations, perhaps the time when our grandparents were just our age, they saw, heard, and really experienced our history, but today all of it are read in books and heard from, if not boring, uhm, yeah from social studies or history teachers.
(no offense ma’am! you’re not boring, promise…) i believe that studying philippine history is relevant because i always think, what if foreigners or our own countyrmen themselves ask? i would really love to tell all about philippine history and tell it with pride (char!) because although Filipinos were treated with discrimination and prejudice and have done stupid things in the past, we must still be proud of our own nationality, our own culture and the values we possess that people from other countries don’t. we must not forget our own history for, whether you like it or not, it is written all over us, runs in our blood, and will always be filled up in our bio-data (joke!), it will always be our… identity! the bottomline is learning EVERYTHING about our history is a must for a citizen who doesn’t know his/her history can never be called a true-blooded Filipino at all…philippine history is not just a subject, it is something worth fighting for.

It is really important for us to determine the importance of Philippine history subject in our lives for us to respond to the situation placed before us and thus our acts are based on our thoughts. The society’s way of facing the challenges depends upon its capabilities. Become aware of the values and beliefs of the people shaped and changed by socioeconomic and geopolitical influences brought by western colonizers. The circumstances surround the colonization of the archipelago and the influences brought about by foreign interaction. Therefore, studying Philippine history subject is a must to be strengthened especially by the academe, so that we can produce a new breed of Filipinos who have a strong sense of nationalism.

I do agree, studying our history is still a need. Although some students would say “past is past”, still, we should give credit to the things that have already happened. We, Filipinos, would not become who we are right now without our past. We should study it in order for us to have clearer views regarding the how’s and why’s in our history and basically to understand it. And with that, better understanding of the current events in our country arises.

We must realy know the strugle’s of our co-Filipino before at the time spaniards on how they protect us from our enemy. we must read scan others book’s or others reading material’s that being publish that tell us about our history so that we can be proudly could say to our self’s that we are realy true Filipino’s that imbrace our own culture’s,and tradition.

To be nationalistic is essential for a person to be able to do his duty in a proper and right way. therefore, I can say that Philippine history must be taught for students to be more competitive in handling things and to be able to manage things, for him/her to be a true- blooded Filipino….

As Filipino citizens, it is necessary for us to study our country’s history for us to understand and learn the deeper meaning of our culture and our country’s beauty. Learning the Philippine’s history is of great privilege for us to internalize the reasons of why Philippines had been a great nation and will always be, knowing how our ancestors build our country, how we had survived everything about our past and how our lives had become at present.

170. aNna zAbaLLero - August 22, 2008

Philippine history is relevant for us because as a pure blooded Filipino, We should know the past events of our country. It is a relevant for us to know Philippine history because some of the events are important to each and all of us. Such as the questions, how the country of Philippines existed? When is the country of Philippines discover as a country? Who discover the Philippines? and etc. For me, as a student, it is important to have this subject because with this subject, it can help us to acknowledge how to improve our country like the article has been said “whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it and the future generation would be freed from the bondage of tyranny and slavery” and it can help us to realize that our country is wonderful and to study Philippine history is an interesting subject. For me, learning Philippine History is very important, even if it is not ask evryday especially when someone interview us… Yes it is true that the filipino in the past was not treated as a people, they’re only being used by the Spaniards thats why there are also some Filipino people that do’t forget what are country experiences in the past, they do not understand it carefully. We need to know all about our country because we are a Filipino people and how can we protect it when we dont know what we are saying. Thats all.

Learning the Philippine History is very relevant because it can give us the knowledge we need and understanding of how our country began, our foundational values and why or how things happened the way they did.History teaches us where mistakes may have taken place and how to avoid those the same mistakes. If you look at history as a whole, you begin to see it as a pattern if just learn how to translate it.History can give you the knowledge on how the people act and think the way they do because history is about people and their cultures and the events that made us people we are today.
Like the saying goes…how do you know where you going,if you don’t know where you’ve come from?right?…..

History subject is very important to know further about our origin as Filipinos. Generation from generation is a part of history and if we lack the knowledge about it, we could not dig further about our past if who we are and where we came from. If we dont take importance about history, then we have no today if we have no past. If our ancestors have mistakes from the past, then present generations must do good to produce better filipinos.400

For me, it’s wonderful to discover some bits of Philippine history and its rich culture. It is important because we have to recognize our early ancestors, and early heroes of our land. It’s also relevant for the fact that every offspring is still a product of our past. Even though that history kind a diffucult to ., study or to memorize, I,am now kind a eager to study more about the history – the Philippine history. It is wonderfull to discover some bits of our historyand to familiarize our heroes that help our country gaine its Freedom.

For me, I do apply our Philippine history as my additional base in studying and to be a better man living here in the Philippines. As the article said, it is important to have our own national identity let us move on to the new generation of Filipinos that have its own freedom and not relying to others. In addition to that, I really do believe that by strengthening our sense of Nationalism can and will be the key to the progress of our dear Pearl of the Orient Sea.

Why should I study about philippine history?

It is a requirement for us to study our history because it is a reflection of our culture. Studying our own history give us the knowledge of who we really are, it give us the idea of our identity as a Filipino. It gives us the sense of nationalism and patriotism, just like our heroes who sacrifice their lives for their love ones and for our country. And also, it’s a must for us young Filipinos to study it, because it is an obligation for us to preseve our culture and pass it down to the next generation.

For me teaching of Philippine history is very important matter for us as a Filipino or a mariner. although as a seafarer this is not important for us but as we are a Filipinos it is very important to us to know our Philippine history in order to us to what the sacrifices did our many Philippine heroes got or fight for our freedom,They gave and sacrifice their lives to have our freedom and our own country thats why we should take care of this.

The author or writer of this was have a point in teaching history they shown to us that we all the Filipinos are always a slave or like his said we are like a parrots i think this is the time to change the image of Filipinos .
Filipinos now in not just like before we can defend our selves at this time ,all the woman can do what man can do not just like before.
for me not good for us that the history of the Philippines is always a slavery i don’t like that the student in the next generation know the suffering of all the Filipinos in the history .
it is good for them that they know the improvement and successive of Philippines.
i suggest to all the phillipine history teacher that in teaching of this subject only the important things and the good things, that our Philippine heroes did do in history so that in the future they more proud in our country thats all thank u ^^ keep safe

HISTORY is a very IMPORTANT SUBJECT because in every research study for future development baseline data is very important. I believe in the sayings of that “EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER”. even in the time of Jesus, the Bible itself is a concrete document that can proved the existence of Christ a long long time ago. Court cases even depended on previous cases because you will never win without proof and bases much more for us students our minds always think of better ideas and how to improved things history plays a vital role in every situation… =)

thanks for that student that he/she had a great philippine history teacher(and i am thanking also that i have a great and funny history teacher). the teacher had a great point of view, students like me is a product of philippine history, those people, who risk there lives for the sake of freedom, is the reason why we can move in our own country freely, and for that we should give effort in studying philippine history in exchange. we should acknowledge them and thank them for it is not easy to earn freedom.

It is a good article. This article really tells us the importance of studying Philippine history.
It is really true that it is important to study Philippine history regardless of the course that we are taking up or whatever job we are planning to have in the future because whether we like it or not, our own history is now a part of our lives and we will always be a part of it. It will also guide us in making our plans especially for our country.
We also need to study Philippine history for us to know our origin, the sacrifices and the struggles of our heroes, to thank them for what they have done for us and for us not to repeat the mistakes what the Filipinos had done before.
Thanks to our Philippine History. (1:00).

My reaction or comment on this article is that,i agree with the topic because we should have the knowledge of our history. And I think it is right to have History subjects in every schools and institution, so that they would know WHY WHO and WHEN we are colonized by the other countries in the world and what are their contributions, influences and values to us filipinos today. We also know that some of the filipinos are not proud of being a filipino, becuase filipinos are being discriminated in the other countries and so they tend to regret of being a filipino.

PHILIPPINE HISTORY…

Is the teaching of Philippine history still important to the present day Pedro’s, Juan’s and Maria’s? Another similar question is was the reason for removing the “Spanish” subject a right move or was the Filipinization of our curriculum the answer to our ever deteriorating educational system. However, since my assignment deals with the first, I will try to summon all my nationalistic genes and try to defend its relevance and hope that my logical, critical and analytical mind will not defeat the former.

Being a first year Bachelor in Science in Marine Transportation student, I believe that learning Philippine history is relevant probably on two points. First, it inculcates in each and every Filipino student the sense of awareness of the past events that are and were significant in the development of our present society. It gives each of us a sense of pride in knowing that our forefathers fought tyranny and oppression from every colonizer there was who wanted to curtail our freedom. It familiarizes us with the significant personalities who fought against these tyrants. Secondly, with each anniversary of these events, I feel that they serve as a reminder of the past but more importantly an inspiration to better ourselves as exemplified by our national heroes.

However, after thinking hard of the reasons I have given above, one cannot deny the fact that this subject is merely a completion for my course. I cannot find any use of Philippine History in my chosen carrier. Even our present day leaders do not know the significance of these events. As proof, why are our national holidays constantly changing its date of commemoration? CRAZY, ISN’T IT? What is actually happening is that a holiday, instead of meaning something, becomes a rest day for us and an additional income for those who are made to work on these days. People are fighting on who really is to be considered our National Hero, Rizal or Bonifacio? We haven’t change since those days, we are still oppressed and are still not independent not from outside tyrants but from our own leaders. We have never been free in terms of debt, poverty and illiteracy, the very same factors that made us a race colonized by three foreign nations.

I hope that when all my classmates are able to work especially on foreign vessels, we will remember the significant dates in our history… I doubt.

Yes,of course as filipino citizen we need to have study our history, it doesn’t matter what course did we took up or field we belong. The studying of history is emtremely important for the reason is that “history provides us with a frame of reference that enables us to recognise dangers to our society, both from within and externally, and it provides guidance as to how to deal with those dangers when they arise”.In addition, there are lot of number of reasons why we should study the history of our country, perhaps the phrase “number of reasons” it is enough for us that issue of studying the history of the country is no longer to be argue.

210. erwin mindog - August 30, 2008

The relevance of philippine history is to strenghten our NATIONALISM as a filipino. Our national heroes must not be forgotten for they have sacrifice their own lives to achieve our freedom that we are enjoying right now. Filipinos must value what our heroes achieved. It is a right to know our own history for the fact we are controlled for almost 400 years, that is a way too long to be controlled by the colonizers. Some filipinos embrace the western culture because it is so cool, but what about ours? It is not bad to embrace other culture but we have our own, that is our top priority to enhance our own culture. People who forget where they came from are insolence. We should be proud of our own nationality for we are filipinos. The relevance of this study is to visualize, to be aware, to criticize, to value, and to respect our own history for this is our history.

211. Jaquelyn Bonachita - August 30, 2008

About the things happening in the country, I agree that were blind of what the real blood of Pilipino are. I can’t imagine the Pilipino if we were not been colonize, maybe we’ll be late about the technology, about the religion, about the economy, etc. but what is the most important is our FREEDOM.
It is true, many of us don’t really care about the country but they only think for their self and family. Nationalism is so poor in us Pilipino, many go abroad, many of us turn to terrorist, many are corrupt just to help their self. For all this happenings, if and only all of us care and knows about the importance of our history, we can make a change. 9:30am

It’s true that today’s generation, if some, doesn’t even try to look back in the past. Maybe it’s the notion that, “past is past and after all we survived”. But why do we still have to study and learn from it over and over again? To me, it is merely because we came from it. It is to remember where we, Filipinos, all began. It is to remember how our ancestors lived and fought for their lives. It is how and why we are still standing and living every second of our lives today. With this in mind, we can always be the pride of our country.

Philippine history is really relevant in any course we take, it always reminds us about what the filipino heroes done for us when the foreign colonized our country. This subject also make filipinos to be strong in the sense of nationalism in our mind and hearts especially today who live with the convinience of the new technology which is a precipitating factor that results from suffering national amnesia.

Studying Philippine history is very much important not only in a nursing students but also in the other fields. We need to study this type of subject, for us to know what was the history of the Philippines and the lives of our ancient people who fights for our freedom. As a student nurse in UIC, I am proud to be a filipino kasi kahit ano pa man kahirap ang pinagdaanan ng mga pilipino noon, ginawa pa rin nila ang lahat para makamit ang isang tagumpay. We also need to study this subject so that we can give importance not only in ourselves but also to our countrymen. As a full blooded Filipino, we must act like a true Filipino and not immitate others. Dapat natin bigyan ng halaga ang ating pagkapilipino kagaya ng ginawa ng mga bayani ntin noon para kahit papano ay hindi na nila tayo pwede tapak-tapakan. I’m proud to be a Filipino!!!!

Yes, I do agree that Philippine history is a relevant subject to be studied since it’s about our country.
It’s important that we know how our country started, how it gain it’s own independence, how it fought for its freedom and most especially how our ancestor had shape our own values and culture. They say if a person does no not look back where he/she come from he/she won’t be able to reach his/her destination. Just like our country, we need to look at our past for us to appreciate and value the sacrifice of our ancestors made. Because if them, become free from colonizers and studying how they fought for will make us aware that they sacrifice a lot for our country and preserve the things they left us with, the culture, values and traditions of being a Filipino.
As a nursing students, we must are all aware that most nurses aimed to go abroad and serve other country and studying Philippine history is a way of reminding that we are Filipinos and so even if we serve other countries in the future, we must always look back to where we came from and be proud that we are Filipinos and be proud on how our country strive for its developments.

Obviuosly its not my choice to read this article neither by accident that i open the blog. Its merely because i take up the history subject and its part of Ms. G requirement. Apparently, whats on my mind is just to read so that i can write a comment, yet as i read the article it somehow gives me a realization that leads to a change in perspective and it gives me an oppurtunity to get in touch and to know more about the history of the place im living with.

Honestly speaking im one of those many students who hate or shall we say doesn’t love to study history subject, because of its obvious reason that history is the past event.Who cares about the past what matters is the present. Whats good thing this article gives me is the strucking statement that says”The fact that we are a true blooded Filipinos, the fact that every generation was and will always be a product of history, history will always be a relevant subject regardless of what course a student takes up.”Truly an amazing statement that we must ponder on,whatever changes occured in this present times we are still the product of the so called “PAST”. So therefore its like a water that we need to intake in order for us to survive. What im trying to mean is that studying history is needed for us to flee ourselves from national amnesia as stated in the article. In additon, if we observe people nowadays we have been manipulated by the
product, lifestyle, trends and fashions by foreign peole. Should we let ourselves continually be influenced by it?no way!that is why through this subject its a stepping stone for us to equip ourselves in knowing our past and avoiding to walk in the path our ancestors walked with. Let us be sensetive and conscious about our history for what beholds us now is the strenght and knowledge our past brought us today.

maA’m G. youre such an influencial writer, thanks for making time doing like this article that somehow awaken us from our unconscious sate of thinking that history isn’t important.and now will give value and looking forward for more learnings that we will gonna learn from your subject.Godbles maa’m*_*

About the importance of Philippine history of Ms.Maribeth Galindo,
I can say that it made a great important role in which the generations would come made to realize how important to know the happenings during the times that our diffefent heroes made their sacrifices for the better next generations. As a Filipino citizen we need to be aware on how Philippnes survive during the time when the colonizers intended to colonize our country. We need to be thankful for them and appreciate their efforts to help the Philippines remain as it was.

My reaction with regards to this article is that, since we are Filipino, and we are living in this country therefore we have to know and identify the importance of those people who spent their lives just to make this country free from those foreign country as our highness and make Filipino people as their slaves even though we are the owner the land of Philippines.
History is an important subject for me, through this we can show our appreciation to our heroes, coz i believe that without them we are not living this way right now without their heroiness just to save our country from the parrot…As a Nursing student I can apply being a hero to my patients during my duty, even outside the hospitals or school campus in a way that taking care of them and help those in need as long as i can… ( 4:00PM )..BSN-3A

i agree that most or almost of the filipino population s stil having dis colonial mentality. they used 2 look at those foreign have rather dan we have. ika-nga “huwag maging alipin sa sariling atin!” a line dat could simple tells us dat we already have the best.
ayt?

i was taught by my teacher in elementary about our history, sibika at kultura, araling panlipunan in my high school and now we do still have these lessons in my college.but the main question here is dat is there any releavance of having a subject about phillppine history? my answer is a simple as this, YES, we are filipinos.we are all products of our history.without knowing that,we would not know why and how we became filipinos.however, we are liable for studying this subject because we wont be promoted to the higher year if we will not take this.ayt?
therefore i conclude,(hahahaha) studying philippine history is a very important to us.not only for students but 2 all of us. bow!

Education plays a very important role in making my life in the future as complete and fulfilling as possible…well well well, studying Philippine history is a little bit boring but in the other side of it Philippine history subject helps me a lot..In history, you could read about the different conquests of people, different individuals with different goals.History is very important because it helps us learn about what worked well and what did not.If something worked really well in the past, then we are likely to repeat the same action. However, if the action in the past did not work well, then we can learn from the mistake. We can either change the action or not ever do it again.
I love to learn new ideas. I know history subject is important that it helps us understand the world better. It helps us understand why things are happening and history can help us solve problems today..and have bright plans for my future..=)
Finally history is very interesting. it is very interesting to see how things have either evolved or change over time. therefore, history is very important to study for many reasons. Everyone finds their own reason for learning history and I can have knowledge to pass on to the FUTURE GENERATIONS..4:00PM

I agree with you ma’am that teaching Philippines history is part of our life since we are Filipinos. As what a had remember the History of the Philippines is believed to have begun with the arrival of the first humans via land bridges at least 30,000 years ago. The first recorded visit from the West is the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan on Homonhon Island, southeast of Samar on March 16, 1521. The Philippine Revolution against Spain began in April 1896, culminating two years later with a proclamation of independence and the establishment of the First Philippine Republic. However, the Treaty of Paris, at the end of the Spanish-American War, transferred control of the Philippines to the United States. This agreement was not recognized by the Philippine Government which, on June 2, 1899, proclaimed a Declaration of War against the United States. The Philippine-American War which ensued resulted in massive casualties. Filipino leader Emilio Aguinaldo was captured in 1901 and the U.S. government declared the conflict officially over in 1902. The Filipino leaders, for the most part, accepted that the Americans had won, but hostilities continued until 1913. U.S. colonial rule of the Philippines started in 1905 with very limited local rule. Partial autonomy (commonwealth status) was granted in 1935, preparatory to a planned full independence from the United States in 1946. Preparation for a fully sovereign state was interrupted by the Japanese occupation of the islands during World War II. We must be faithfully know the history of our lives to till to anybody that we are true Filipino’s. thats all ma’am thank you….. have a nice day…..
