Same sex marriage by: Maribeth Q. Galindo September 9, 2008

Same sex marriage, is the Filipino culture ready to accept same sex marriage? Why not allow it? These are some of my questions that need to be clarified. In a conservative culture like Philippines, the word “marriage” is defined both in the church and in the state as a binding of two different genders, a male and female. This definition was and is clearly taught and inculcated to everyone’s mind. Thus, the sacredness of marriage lies in the sacrament and vows of the couples made. Unfortunately, there were/are couples who have difficulty of holding on what they have promised to each other then later file an annulment thus, making them free again. Indeed, marriage/annulment is a special privilege given to a man/woman. I said especial privilege because not every lover has given the legal and spiritual rights to be married such as gays/lesbians.

Why is it hard for the Filipino society to accept and allow same sex marriage? And to think the issue of same sex marriage has long been an issue that needs to be heard. In some countries like Belgium, Netherlands, Columbia, South Africa, Spain, Massachusetts, California etc. settled the cries of the gays/lesbians and legalized same sex marriage. However, gays/lesbians in the Philippines still fighting for the rights mentioned to be given to them.

At present, most of the lawmakers if not all are very much hesitant to make provisions for the legalization of same sex marriage considering the fact that Philippines is a catholic country. Naturally, a lot of criticism will come if same sex marriage will be approved.

Seemingly, people looked at same sex marriage as an immoral act, not good to see in the eyes of the other, therefore, it is scandalous and it shouldn’t be made legal. A very limited point of view of what morality means? Why can’t lawmakers give rights for gays/lesbians to be legally married? Definitely, they will not use the money of the Filipino people for the celebration. Unlike those greedy politicians who keep on spending the money of the country for going abroad, stayed in first class hotels, having expensive gadgets for their work, having luxury cars yet many people suffered in poverty but it seems they have not felt the agony of the people. Corrupt politicians are disgraced to the country. Shame on you!!!! Now, whose actions are immoral, inappropriate, and scandalous? No provisions also made in the constitution that allows corruption and yet politicians are doing it. So, lawmakers, why can’t you give way and make laws for same sex marriage for the gays/lesbians for them to be happy in one way or another and be protected legally? Those people who are against of same sex marriage just give gays/lesbians a break. Don’t be too harsh on them. Apparently, it’s not for us to condemn these people….If you were one of the lawmakers, what will you do?

Rizal vs. Bonifacio, Is it fair to compare? by: Maribeth Q. Galindo September 9, 2008

The name Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio are some of the well-known personalities that have been mentioned in the annals of Philippine history. The exemplary deeds that they had done for our country; in order to achieve freedom from the hands of the Spanish colonizers is worth to be remembered specially by the present generation. Indeed, their heroism is well done.
Apparently, there are some students, faculty, leftist, writers, critics and even we perhaps questioned the credibility of Rizal when he got the title of being our “Philippine National Hero” why not Bonifacio which results to the existence of pro-Bonifacio and anti-Rizal or pro-Rizal and anti-Bonifacio. The comparison of these two personalities and made endless debate of who should be our national hero is much discussed in the environment of academe.
Moreover, to give you a little background, Jose Rizal was a son of an educated parents and belong to a wealthy family. All siblings of Rizal’s family had gone to school. Jose studied in Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas and had gone to Europe for further studies. He finished medical course specializes in Ophthalmology and made known for his talents in writing, painting, sculpturing, fencing and others. He fought the Spanish tyranny through a propaganda battles by means of using his pen in critiquing and exposing the defects of Spanish governance. He died in front of the Spanish and Filipino crowds by a firing squad on December 30, 1896 due to a false accusation of instigating Philippine revolution. Thus, his charisma for the elite and intellectuals are proven strong.
On the other hand, Andres Bonifacio was a son of a farmer and belongs to a poor family. All siblings of Bonifacio’s family had not even finished high school due to economic instability. Andres at early age had to work hard and carries big responsibilities for him to help his family. Andres represents the grassroots of society that were/are usually exploited, abused, maltreated, and marginalized one. He proved to be a good organizer when he established a revolutionary movement called “Katipunan” in 1892. He fought the Spanish tyranny by using bolos and guns, thus, encouraging bloody revolution.
Sadly, he was executed by his co-katipuneros on May 10, 1897 which was not made known to many Filipinos due to a false accusation of betraying Philippine government. Jealousy and greediness of power brought Andres to death. Thus, his strong charisma for the masses is pretty obvious.
Now, would it be fair for these two personalities that are extremely opposite to be compared? Would it be fair for a rich man to be compared by a poor man? Would it also be fair for a poor man being compared with a rich man? Would it be fair for a doctor to be compared by a farmer? Would it be fair too to a farmer to be compared by a doctor? Where is fairness if an educated man who attained the higher degree of education being compared to a man who didn’t even finished high school and vice versa. Come to think of it……
But one thing I am sure of, that these two personalities have in common, they are both brave and great heroes of their time. They both wanted freedom for the Filipinos that long been controlled by the Spaniards. So, do not compare and stop using each others weaknesses and flaws in order to put down one another. If Rizal and Bonifacio would still be alive, definitely, they don’t want to be compared. Who wants to be compared anyway?

A Reflection on Measuring Philippine Development by: Maribeth Q. Galindo September 1, 2008

The Philippines, categorically, is a nation which, unfortunately belongs to the third world country, a definition of relatively struggling nation when it comes to economic progress and development. This category has been the country’s unfavorable image for a long period of time, hence, the government and other private sectors made strenuous efforts and programs to get rid of this status by creating different techniques just to improve the condition of living of every Filipino people in general.

This is maybe the reason the Development Academy of the Philippines conducted a study on The Social Indicators to hopefully implemented an appropriate program for national welfares. The social indicator’s project aims to gauge the present condition of the Philippines in the modern society; its objective is a system of measurement which is capable of depicting aspects of both improvement and deterioration in national welfares.

The report extensively contains an appraisal of the circumstances of Filipino welfares, its causes and effects and the right things to be done especially for political leaders to be more considerate in creating laws and programs. The social indicators presented hopefully will be used as guidelines in identifying and implementing the right policies. The government has its responsibility to rightfully disseminate the information to the general public, so they will be informed on the great deal of this awareness.

The term “welfare” as define in the report is used in broad sense. It is associated with “well being”, “happiness”, “quantity of life”, “state of development” and other terms which is meant to refer to the degree of achievement of the important goals of Philippine society as the whole project proceeded.

The following are the proposed set of social indicators for the Philippine welfare:

  1. Health and Nutrition — free from hunger, malnutrition and disease in life.
  2. Learning — Acquisition of knowledge and skill on the job.
  3. Income and Consumption — freedom from poverty, for greater consumption and for protection against inflation.
  4. Employment — people be able to work and to be fairly compensated.
  5. Non-human productive resources — the rate of exploitation doe not prejudice future generation.
  6. Housing, utilities and the environment — basic concern for proper housing, safe water, electricity and clean air to breathe.
  7. Public Safety and Justice — basic concern for peace and order and for speedy, equitable and efficient justice.
  8. Political Values — basic concern for a democratic government with freedom both to participate.

Social indicators then is equated with welfare indicators which is designed to reflect the degree of enhancement in any social concern on the degree of sharing in that enhancement among present day Filipinos and between those alive and unborn. But in analyzing different aspects of achievement and welfare, the policies should be totally diverse from other countries and territories because the Philippine society needs are far more different and that the national welfare is based on the present condition, culture and tradition of Filipinos. But even its citizen also has different needs, the underprivileged has different priorities and necessities compare to the upper class. They are more concern on their personal needs than that of their environment.

Thus, in order to achieve a progressive condition of the Filipinos, the indicators used for evaluating the improvement as well as the deterioration of the national welfare must be significant and clearly defined to come up with orderly and well organized policies to harmonize with the present situation of the Philippine society with fairness regardless of the class and status of each individual. The national welfares reflected different concerns and considerations specifically political, social and ethical. These concerns must be put into consideration when implementing policies to avoid biases and discrimination against certain groups and individuals. Ethnically, Philippines subdivided into different groups and this variation has mixed traditions, beliefs and needs and these considerations sometimes are so sensitive that the social indicators must be carefully outlined to compliment these factors.

The modern world is fast changing, norms sometimes dictate society and in order to be more responsive with this changes, the environment must completely in harmony with the level of condition of the lives of every citizen to function well in the society. The national welfares should be taken care of and be equally distributed to every single person to experience life in a more meaningful and sensible way. If these needs will not meet and if the welfare is inadequate, chances are, development and progress is impossible to achieve and as a result, slow improvement in the different aspects of life and convenience is too dim for everyone to experience. Economic and ethical concerns, in some ways are two inseparable states when progress is concerned because they both played an important role in the lives of the people. Without economic stability, society tends to slump down, without fairness in ethical conditions, environment lost the very profound of freedom in every areas. Therefore these two basic concerns should be satisfied first in order to achieve a just and humane society, penetrating further the real meaning of development.

A Reflection on Postmodernism by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 27, 2008

Postmodernism in a Stanford Encyclopedia definition, can be described as a set of critical, strategic, and rhetorical practices employing concepts such as difference, repetition and hyper reality to destabilize other concepts such as presence, identity and historical progress.

In other materials, Postmodernism is a concept that is applied to a wide-ranging set of development or in various discipline or areas of study such as art, philosophy, architecture, music, film, literature, sociology, communication, fashion, technology, etc. Postmodernism sometimes abbreviated “promo” was originally a reaction to modernism. Largely, influenced by the disillusionment induced “by the second world war”, postmodernism tends to refer to a cultural, intellectual or artistic state lacking a clear central hierarchy or organizing principle and embodying extreme complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, diversity and interconnectedness.

Throughout the volatile period of the second world war, many have influences this concept, widening perspective on how to deal and solve problems that arises through globalization. Eventually, the important development propelled the minds of the latest generation are more vigilant and critical of the updates in their surrounding and as a result of this curiosity they are faced with the new twist of events that they needed to be reinforced with the new and fresh concept. Seemingly, society before the development of postmodernism follows what is universally accepted, they saw roaring progress in economy and soaring development in lifestyle brought by modernization tools and integrated in their daily routine. Thus, society’s mentality is fixated.

By the time postmodernism was introduced in the era of new technology, society becomes exhausted with the pointless meaning of existence and the value of freedom that they wanted fresh ideals and approach. The strategic and aesthetic playfulness of the concept offers different views and impact that it became soon accepted. It gives good ground for confronting complex issues that present in the various disciplines. Moreover, it tends to condition the minds of the people to disregard what is universally accepted within the framework. Apparently, it attracts liberals and radicals in accepting alternatives in solving dilemmas in other ways. Thus, society’s mentality is not fixated anymore.

The profound truth of this post modern age is that society’s sensible mind finds its way to understanding especially to the public who seems to be confused and bother which is reliable and which is not. One point is that this is a good development in the upgraded educational system in our generation particularly on some progressive individuals whose creativity resulted in the birth of postmodernism concept and that this may have a distinction for some personal improvement of the lives of the people who are eager to change the dogmatic norms in the environment.

Man is never been satisfied and contented. There are many questions in his mind that needs to be answered, many doubts that needs to be clarified, many misconceptions that needs to be corrected and sometimes there are questions that remains to b questions forever, that is why man never stops searching for truth no matter how far and  long it takes, how heavy the difficulty was/is, no matter what degradation he subject himself to, he will still continue the journey of searching and in doing so, he can be more organized and systematic in finding ways.

Nevertheless, expect that not everybody will go to accept the results of your endeavor if it is to be presented to an individual, community or society considering that they have already established set of beliefs/norms that are highly followed and the difficulty to replace the old beliefs/norms with the new ones will be encountered.

Likewise, in any field of discipline, there will always be an individual, researchers or group of experts usually come up with new assumptions or theories that requires the reconstruction of prior assumptions and the reevaluation of prior facts. In doing so, expect that experts will encounter problem for convincing the established community for the acceptance of new theories/assumptions, thus strong resistance will be shown.

Moreover, a shift in professional commitments to share assumptions takes place when an anomaly “subverts the existing tradition of scientific practice”. These shifts are what Kuhn describes as scientific revolutions. The tradition shattering complements to the tradition bound activity of normal science is predicted on the assumption that scientific community knows what the world is like. Scientist then takes great pains in defending the new assumption. But when the shift takes place, a scientist world is qualitatively transformed and quantitatively enriched by fundamental novelties of either facts or theories.

Initially, a new paradigm is beneficial and it offers a promise of success since it gives a better, clearer and a more systematic study in any fields of specialization that brings good contributions to society itself. Thus, coming up with the scientific revolution can be understood as a collaborative, interest based efforts to resolve an unanswered questions, conflicts or doubts. Indeed, scientist have to remember that a paradigm is limited in scope and if paradigm consist of basic and incontrovertible assumptions about the nature of discipline, what questions then are left to ask?

Women Who Fall with a Married Man by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 11, 2008

One night, I was riding a jeep going home. It took the ride for almost an hour before reaching my destination. I fall asleep until my consciousness was caught by two ladies who were sitting beside me who kept on talking about their illicit affair with a married man. Unintentionally, I heard everything they’ve talked about. As if these two ladies doesn’t care if others will hear them. Who cares anyway? I said to myself, what a flirt ladies! As if I am not one of them……. to loud to tell about their illicit affairs and theirs nothing to be proud of!!!!! One of them even said, well if our relationship will end at least I’ve tasted him. She’s really flirty, isn’t it? But I like what she said “I’ve tasted him”. It sounds like a woman whose world does not evolve and revolve with a man only that whatever happens life must go on…

As they go on with their conversation, I realized somehow that they are naïve in one way or another when one of them said if only the man at first does not pretend that he is single and if only I have known it earlier, I wouldn’t be fall for him…I said to myself, well married man ten meters away from home made themselves single, with the exemption of some. If the man takes care of you, looks good, financially stable, love you that much, I rather want to be called as naïve some naughty thoughts came in my mind while listening.

Nevertheless, I felt pity on them because they can be a victim of love. Their vulnerability was being tested by the circumstance that can be difficult to stop because it involves emotional attachment.  A circumstance that measured their conviction in life on how far are they going to stand by their principle? Thus, one of the uncontrollable circumstance is falling in love coz we cannot tell our hearts when to start loving. In that sense, my sympathy is with them because when you fell in love you cannot rationalize your feelings sometimes. No matter how intelligent you are and how morally accepted are your thoughts, it would not make you stop loving the person. Even if the people surrounds you slaps in your face the disadvantage of pursuing the relationship, still you insist your feelings. Upon knowing the worst of the person you love, still you continue loving him. Upon learning that at the end of the relationship you’re on the losing side, still you fight for him. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! What a nice feelings but terrible, unstoppable and unthinkable. When you’re in love you cannot tell your heart when to stop loving the person.

Now, is it right for us to label these women who fall with a married man as FLIRTY one because they are too loud in their relationship? Or can we call them as NAÏVE one because they can easily be fooled with words and promises? Or VICTIM because they couldn’t resist the temptation of love. The answer lies in your hand. What do you think?

The Relevance of Rizal Course by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 7, 2008

Most often students feels that Rizal course is an additional burden to their studies because it is a minor subject. The person had been studied was already dead. Students further said that what’s the use of Rizal course where in fact they could not use the name Rizal as one of their references when they apply for a job nor Rizal could back up them if they need help…Well of course! A dead person cannot do anything about the life of the living but the thoughts, ideals, dreams, principles or convictions that he left might be very influential to people’s life as a basis of getting strength in their day to day existence. And that’s where the relevance of Rizal subject came in.

Indeed, Republic Act 1425 otherwise known as Rizal law was approved in June of 1956 made it clear that Rizal subject is a compulsory to all students who are enrolled in different colleges and universities. Obviously, a student cannot graduate in his course without taking and passing Rizal subject. Therefore, Rizal subject is equally important to all other subjects.

Moreover, Rizal subject would have meaning if the teacher who taught the subject would not just focus her/his discussion to life of Rizal per see but rather made the life of Rizal as a springboard of discussing the culture of the Filipinos, its political, economic and social affairs in the past and relate it at present situation of the people. In that way, student critical thinking would be developed more. As a result students would take an active part not only in the classroom setting but also in participating outside activities for the betterment of the Philippine society in general.

More importantly, the value of being a religious person, a loving and obedient son to his parents/family, a responsible student, a strong willed individual who stands for his convictions, the one who loves and serves the country are some of the virtues of Rizal that must and should be emphasized in the whole duration of the coarse. And that’s where the relevance of  Rizal subject lies.

Reflection on getting a Ph D Degree by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 2, 2008

Ph D always refers to the highest form of education known to man, it is a term closely associated with proficiency and competence. The term also signifies a different level of learning, though it is the culmination of our education in our system, it is not always the basis of intellectual measurement but the result of hard work and persistence. It is a degree of education that requires a lot of effort and perseverance.

Individuals who have earned this field are perceived to be of high intellectual background and the high caliber of their thinking is superior above everybody. With this impressions, I could not deny the fact that I have some doubts of the capabilities of some Ph D graduates. I have encountered some Ph D graduates yet they don’t sound like what I expected from them. They don’t have the convincing power to let others listen when they speak and the command that they’re supposed to have in their field.

I have known also some Ph D graduates and yet they don’t have any researches except for their dissertation. It’s so happen they’re given a high position in the academe. Somehow, the degree itself by name give prestige to their names. Others speculated that it’s easy to get a made to order diploma in Ph d if you the money. Why not, the speculation is not impossible. But for those individuals who wanted to live the real essence of being a Ph D degree holder won’t buy this kind of stuff.

According to E. Phillips, Ph D degree is a licensed to teach in a university as a member of faculty and is in command of the field of the study and can make worthwhile contributions to it. It plays a significant role in the academic system. Thus, Ph.D degree is accompanied by responsibility and diligence. Knowledge is necessary but not enough; it needs also determination and application of your work for the betterment of the said system. Moreover, teaching in a university requires a lot of patience and dedication. It is a rewarding job to fulfill because of the valuable lessons that can be impart to the students, that’s why teaching more than a profession is a vocation because of the nobility of purpose.

Perhaps, many are willing to enroll in Ph D but tough road ahead is challenging that only few individuals manage to stay, those few who possess the value of endurance. Hindrances may encounter as they go through the stiff process of the studies such as time, money, distance, and etc if you are working at the same time studying. Financial constraints are one factor to think about if you are not earning that much. Distance is another tiring reason if the work place is far, extra effort will be exerted patiently to cope up with the time table of the classes. However, this can be done through self discipline, imposing strict time management is a successful resolution for others anyway.

Getting into Ph D, a student must bear in mind that he/she still have many things to explore, learn and reassess many doctrines, therefore, it requires a lot of initiative. Doing this, not only means finding reading materials and research work but also talking to people who has the authority to their fields. Information and insights can be done through listening from people’s experience and learning the lessons that accompanies, just be opened and gentle in asking some things that you want to know which is necessary to your field.

More importantly, by allowing yourself also to recognize your own shortcomings is a good start to embrace the field of Ph d as a whole. This is just a springboard to a brighter future and should be planned properly. Thus, the venue for personal and professional growth is widely recognized and somehow it offers a lot of opportunities beyond the current status and granting a considerable financial security.

The Importance of Philippine History Subject by: Maribeth Q. Galindo July 28, 2008

Often times, my students in Philippine history ask…”Ma’am, is the teaching of Philippine history subject still relevant in our course? Past is past, we could not change it. We could not give back the lives lost nor use the names of our hero’s, such as Jose Rizal, Emilio Aguinaldo, Andres Bonifacio and others as references when we apply for a job. If we do use their names, definitely, we will not be hired. We will not even ask what is  Philippine history during the interviews. So, what is the use of studying Philippine history?

When I hear these questions, it makes me think for a while and say with conviction… Yes! Learning Philippine history is still and will always be relevant. The fact that we are a true blooded Filipinos, the fact that every generation was and will always be a product of history, history will always be a relevant subject regardless of what course a student takes up.

The Philippines was controlled by foreign colonizers for almost 400 years. History can tell us that during the colonization period Filipinos were not taught their own history but rather were taught the history of colonizers WHILE they were in our country. Sadly, Filipinos were likes parrots. Filipinos were forced and trained how to memorize dates, persons, places and events without even understanding what they memorized.

As a new breed of historians, teachers of history must not only be limited to questions of who, what, were and when. Teaching history should go beyond dates, persons, places etc. Teaching the HOW’s and the WHY’s of history would train the student show to think critically. Furthermore, teaching history through contextualization would develop in students a deep sense of understanding of their origins and would develop in them active participation, not only in classroom discussion, but also in performing their role as citizens of our country.

Apparently, Filipinos are suffering from national amnesia. Colonial mentality is deeply rooted in those who are not proud of being a Filipino and in those who look at anything foreign as best. Thus, colonial mentality destroys our national identity. Therefore, teaching Philippine history subjects is a must and must be strengthened especially by the academe, so that we can produce a new breed of Filipinos who have a strong sense of NATIONALISM in their hearts and minds. As a result, whatever the mistakes in the past are, the present generation may not repeat it and the future generation would be freed from the bondage of tyranny and slavery.

Mayang Bungol by: Maribeth Q. Galindo July 28, 2008

I often heard the term Mayang Bungol being uttered by my gay friends every time we have conversation. I got curious of what does it mean because I couldn’t found the term in the dictionary, so when I asked them, they said the term is being referred to those guys whose hiding their real color. They dress like, talk like, live like, act like a macho man but behind the image that they portray, live a big fantasy. They were laughing out loud while describing the term and said it takes one to know one. Then, I conclude, Mayang Bungol is an idiomatic expression used by some group of gays which they labeled to those homosexual whose identity are not yet revealed to their family, relatives, friends, girlfriends or even to their wives.

Suddenly, I asked my gay friends, how would I know if my boyfriend is straight or not? They were laughing again and said, girl be observant to your boyfriend actions and reactions…..When you were dating in the mall or where ever while you were eating or walking and unconsciously, he gave side comments about the perfumes, hair styles, finger nails, out fits of every man that caught his attention more or less your bf is mayang ungbol. Nevertheless, when you were watching movie be naughty sometimes. Slowly touch his private part, when he refuses and got mad, girl your bf is 99.9% mayang bungol. Straight guys may not react that way, they love that they’re private part will be touched by their gf, its not rude but it’s a normal reaction.….. I got silent for a moment and said to myself, I’ll do it after all he is my boyfriend…You too ladies out there who have boyfriends, try also to do it. Anyway, there’s no harm in trying………………

I further asked other signs of mayang bungol. They said with confident, those guys who keeps on changing their gf every now and then who pretends to be a “chickboy” trying to convince themselves that they are straight, trying to cover their identity by having many girls in his life to the extend of having sex to his girls but still the guy is not satisfied, then he is mayang bungol.  In addition, if the guy got mad or annoyed, if he knows a certain gals got a crush or admiration on him to the extend of ignoring the gal’s presence. Straight guys seldom act that way. Seemingly, if the guy reached at his age of 30’s, good looking and stable financially yet no plan to have a girlfriend or to settle down, then he is mayang bungol. Straight guys with good looks usually at that age has gf or planning to settle down. Thus, for newly wed couple, after 3 or 4 weeks, the guy starts to sleep separately at night and make alibis that he is tired from his work and seldom have sex with his wife, no doubt, the guy is mayang bungol . Straight guy would not abstain from sex since it’s still their honeymoon period and supposedly enjoy each other’s presence on bed.

On the contrary, I believe that not all guys who does similar actions and reactions on the different situations mentioned were all mayang bungol. I would like to give the benefit of the doubt for those who are not really mayang bungol but their feminity is likely obvious. Indeed, I have nothing against them. In fact I feel pity on them. It’s not easy to suppress your emotions just because you wanted to please the people surrounds you even to the extend of sacrificing your own happiness. I could not imagine how life would it be, living in the world of lies……My sympathy is with them too, as much as they don’t want the feelings but they have difficulty of controlling or stopping it, its really an agony. It is an emotional and psychological torture on their part that needs to be understood deeply especially by their loved ones without criticizing or judging them.
