Postmodernism in a Stanford Encyclopedia definition, can be described as a set of critical, strategic, and rhetorical practices employing concepts such as difference, repetition and hyper reality to destabilize other concepts such as presence, identity and historical progress.

In other materials, Postmodernism is a concept that is applied to a wide-ranging set of development or in various discipline or areas of study such as art, philosophy, architecture, music, film, literature, sociology, communication, fashion, technology, etc. Postmodernism sometimes abbreviated “promo” was originally a reaction to modernism. Largely, influenced by the disillusionment induced “by the second world war”, postmodernism tends to refer to a cultural, intellectual or artistic state lacking a clear central hierarchy or organizing principle and embodying extreme complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, diversity and interconnectedness.

Throughout the volatile period of the second world war, many have influences this concept, widening perspective on how to deal and solve problems that arises through globalization. Eventually, the important development propelled the minds of the latest generation are more vigilant and critical of the updates in their surrounding and as a result of this curiosity they are faced with the new twist of events that they needed to be reinforced with the new and fresh concept. Seemingly, society before the development of postmodernism follows what is universally accepted, they saw roaring progress in economy and soaring development in lifestyle brought by modernization tools and integrated in their daily routine. Thus, society’s mentality is fixated.

By the time postmodernism was introduced in the era of new technology, society becomes exhausted with the pointless meaning of existence and the value of freedom that they wanted fresh ideals and approach. The strategic and aesthetic playfulness of the concept offers different views and impact that it became soon accepted. It gives good ground for confronting complex issues that present in the various disciplines. Moreover, it tends to condition the minds of the people to disregard what is universally accepted within the framework. Apparently, it attracts liberals and radicals in accepting alternatives in solving dilemmas in other ways. Thus, society’s mentality is not fixated anymore.

The profound truth of this post modern age is that society’s sensible mind finds its way to understanding especially to the public who seems to be confused and bother which is reliable and which is not. One point is that this is a good development in the upgraded educational system in our generation particularly on some progressive individuals whose creativity resulted in the birth of postmodernism concept and that this may have a distinction for some personal improvement of the lives of the people who are eager to change the dogmatic norms in the environment.

Man is never been satisfied and contented. There are many questions in his mind that needs to be answered, many doubts that needs to be clarified, many misconceptions that needs to be corrected and sometimes there are questions that remains to b questions forever, that is why man never stops searching for truth no matter how far and  long it takes, how heavy the difficulty was/is, no matter what degradation he subject himself to, he will still continue the journey of searching and in doing so, he can be more organized and systematic in finding ways.

Nevertheless, expect that not everybody will go to accept the results of your endeavor if it is to be presented to an individual, community or society considering that they have already established set of beliefs/norms that are highly followed and the difficulty to replace the old beliefs/norms with the new ones will be encountered.

Likewise, in any field of discipline, there will always be an individual, researchers or group of experts usually come up with new assumptions or theories that requires the reconstruction of prior assumptions and the reevaluation of prior facts. In doing so, expect that experts will encounter problem for convincing the established community for the acceptance of new theories/assumptions, thus strong resistance will be shown.

Moreover, a shift in professional commitments to share assumptions takes place when an anomaly “subverts the existing tradition of scientific practice”. These shifts are what Kuhn describes as scientific revolutions. The tradition shattering complements to the tradition bound activity of normal science is predicted on the assumption that scientific community knows what the world is like. Scientist then takes great pains in defending the new assumption. But when the shift takes place, a scientist world is qualitatively transformed and quantitatively enriched by fundamental novelties of either facts or theories.

Initially, a new paradigm is beneficial and it offers a promise of success since it gives a better, clearer and a more systematic study in any fields of specialization that brings good contributions to society itself. Thus, coming up with the scientific revolution can be understood as a collaborative, interest based efforts to resolve an unanswered questions, conflicts or doubts. Indeed, scientist have to remember that a paradigm is limited in scope and if paradigm consist of basic and incontrovertible assumptions about the nature of discipline, what questions then are left to ask?

Women Who Fall with a Married Man by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 11, 2008

One night, I was riding a jeep going home. It took the ride for almost an hour before reaching my destination. I fall asleep until my consciousness was caught by two ladies who were sitting beside me who kept on talking about their illicit affair with a married man. Unintentionally, I heard everything they’ve talked about. As if these two ladies doesn’t care if others will hear them. Who cares anyway? I said to myself, what a flirt ladies! As if I am not one of them……. to loud to tell about their illicit affairs and theirs nothing to be proud of!!!!! One of them even said, well if our relationship will end at least I’ve tasted him. She’s really flirty, isn’t it? But I like what she said “I’ve tasted him”. It sounds like a woman whose world does not evolve and revolve with a man only that whatever happens life must go on…

As they go on with their conversation, I realized somehow that they are naïve in one way or another when one of them said if only the man at first does not pretend that he is single and if only I have known it earlier, I wouldn’t be fall for him…I said to myself, well married man ten meters away from home made themselves single, with the exemption of some. If the man takes care of you, looks good, financially stable, love you that much, I rather want to be called as naïve some naughty thoughts came in my mind while listening.

Nevertheless, I felt pity on them because they can be a victim of love. Their vulnerability was being tested by the circumstance that can be difficult to stop because it involves emotional attachment.  A circumstance that measured their conviction in life on how far are they going to stand by their principle? Thus, one of the uncontrollable circumstance is falling in love coz we cannot tell our hearts when to start loving. In that sense, my sympathy is with them because when you fell in love you cannot rationalize your feelings sometimes. No matter how intelligent you are and how morally accepted are your thoughts, it would not make you stop loving the person. Even if the people surrounds you slaps in your face the disadvantage of pursuing the relationship, still you insist your feelings. Upon knowing the worst of the person you love, still you continue loving him. Upon learning that at the end of the relationship you’re on the losing side, still you fight for him. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! What a nice feelings but terrible, unstoppable and unthinkable. When you’re in love you cannot tell your heart when to stop loving the person.

Now, is it right for us to label these women who fall with a married man as FLIRTY one because they are too loud in their relationship? Or can we call them as NAÏVE one because they can easily be fooled with words and promises? Or VICTIM because they couldn’t resist the temptation of love. The answer lies in your hand. What do you think?

Most often students feels that Rizal course is an additional burden to their studies because it is a minor subject. The person had been studied was already dead. Students further said that what’s the use of Rizal course where in fact they could not use the name Rizal as one of their references when they apply for a job nor Rizal could back up them if they need help…Well of course! A dead person cannot do anything about the life of the living but the thoughts, ideals, dreams, principles or convictions that he left might be very influential to people’s life as a basis of getting strength in their day to day existence. And that’s where the relevance of Rizal subject came in.

Indeed, Republic Act 1425 otherwise known as Rizal law was approved in June of 1956 made it clear that Rizal subject is a compulsory to all students who are enrolled in different colleges and universities. Obviously, a student cannot graduate in his course without taking and passing Rizal subject. Therefore, Rizal subject is equally important to all other subjects.

Moreover, Rizal subject would have meaning if the teacher who taught the subject would not just focus her/his discussion to life of Rizal per see but rather made the life of Rizal as a springboard of discussing the culture of the Filipinos, its political, economic and social affairs in the past and relate it at present situation of the people. In that way, student critical thinking would be developed more. As a result students would take an active part not only in the classroom setting but also in participating outside activities for the betterment of the Philippine society in general.

More importantly, the value of being a religious person, a loving and obedient son to his parents/family, a responsible student, a strong willed individual who stands for his convictions, the one who loves and serves the country are some of the virtues of Rizal that must and should be emphasized in the whole duration of the coarse. And that’s where the relevance of  Rizal subject lies.

Reflection on getting a Ph D Degree by: Maribeth Q. Galindo August 2, 2008

Ph D always refers to the highest form of education known to man, it is a term closely associated with proficiency and competence. The term also signifies a different level of learning, though it is the culmination of our education in our system, it is not always the basis of intellectual measurement but the result of hard work and persistence. It is a degree of education that requires a lot of effort and perseverance.

Individuals who have earned this field are perceived to be of high intellectual background and the high caliber of their thinking is superior above everybody. With this impressions, I could not deny the fact that I have some doubts of the capabilities of some Ph D graduates. I have encountered some Ph D graduates yet they don’t sound like what I expected from them. They don’t have the convincing power to let others listen when they speak and the command that they’re supposed to have in their field.

I have known also some Ph D graduates and yet they don’t have any researches except for their dissertation. It’s so happen they’re given a high position in the academe. Somehow, the degree itself by name give prestige to their names. Others speculated that it’s easy to get a made to order diploma in Ph d if you the money. Why not, the speculation is not impossible. But for those individuals who wanted to live the real essence of being a Ph D degree holder won’t buy this kind of stuff.

According to E. Phillips, Ph D degree is a licensed to teach in a university as a member of faculty and is in command of the field of the study and can make worthwhile contributions to it. It plays a significant role in the academic system. Thus, Ph.D degree is accompanied by responsibility and diligence. Knowledge is necessary but not enough; it needs also determination and application of your work for the betterment of the said system. Moreover, teaching in a university requires a lot of patience and dedication. It is a rewarding job to fulfill because of the valuable lessons that can be impart to the students, that’s why teaching more than a profession is a vocation because of the nobility of purpose.

Perhaps, many are willing to enroll in Ph D but tough road ahead is challenging that only few individuals manage to stay, those few who possess the value of endurance. Hindrances may encounter as they go through the stiff process of the studies such as time, money, distance, and etc if you are working at the same time studying. Financial constraints are one factor to think about if you are not earning that much. Distance is another tiring reason if the work place is far, extra effort will be exerted patiently to cope up with the time table of the classes. However, this can be done through self discipline, imposing strict time management is a successful resolution for others anyway.

Getting into Ph D, a student must bear in mind that he/she still have many things to explore, learn and reassess many doctrines, therefore, it requires a lot of initiative. Doing this, not only means finding reading materials and research work but also talking to people who has the authority to their fields. Information and insights can be done through listening from people’s experience and learning the lessons that accompanies, just be opened and gentle in asking some things that you want to know which is necessary to your field.

More importantly, by allowing yourself also to recognize your own shortcomings is a good start to embrace the field of Ph d as a whole. This is just a springboard to a brighter future and should be planned properly. Thus, the venue for personal and professional growth is widely recognized and somehow it offers a lot of opportunities beyond the current status and granting a considerable financial security.
